God, the Oktava is amazing.

I came on here and asked for questions, asked for help and recieved that. It'd only be fair that I tell you guys how my experience was when using the oktava mk-012. Now, the search here is the best thing to use for anyone who's clueless (like I was). It helps tons. I'd look around, and all I heard was just how great the Oktava was for indoor scenes, but no one ever talked about "why". They talked about it being good, about it being cheep, about it being pretty, but not about WHY it was good. So after using it for my "dramatic dialogue scenes" which were embedded with cubersome amounts of yelling, swearing, and whispers-- all I can say is the Oktava is gruesomely amazing because of its ability to make voices sound intimate yet sullen. That's right, if you've got a good ear when it comes to audio, you'll probably hear what I hear and thats intimate voices and sullen tones, it is absolutely great. Now someone who doesn't pay attention to these things might just say "thats an alright mic." So, in others words, thanks for the intimacy guys, its great.

   You know people seem to think the audio people here are bitter but if more people came back with these kinds of follow ups perhaps we wouldn't always feel like we are wasting our time.

Thanks Saiaf

I've gone on about that thing until I'm blue in the face... you may notice I haven't been posting about that mic as much lately... it's because there's only so many ways I can try to make the point.

That little mic is a phenomenon... lately I've felt tempted to make a DVD of everything I know about all things video/audio... the Oktava would comprise 5 minutes on it's own.

DO IT! I am sure it would be more valuable and useful than some of the other disks I have bought in the past.

Anytime wabbit, and a dvd would be great Mattin, I can honestly see people fighting to watch it. Besides, a video would be great to look at as it shows all the different mics and what not, a documentary, man that'd be awesome. All audio in the first segment, then all video.

I've been thinking of getting one for my indoor stuff (I have an Audio Technica AT897 for outdoor), sound like such an awesome mic!

I've been trying to get some more tips from you for some time so If I have to pay for them I'd be happy to do it. Make the DVD and I'm there. In fact, tell me what the price will be and I'll prepay! $25.00, $30.00? More? Don't care. Will send it by PayPal. Just say the word.

i can give you a hand whith the non english section :-)
by the way - octava is grate - but for the price you pay , no more
if you have the appurtunity buy akg480/460 or mbho 603/604 , these mics much better in the midle options

I bought the Oktava based off the recommendations here,
also through the sound room, it has limitations such as not liking handling and the outdoors, its such a steal for that price. I've been playing with it alot... So crisp..

please say you're not yanking my chain about putting together a dvd. i'd buy a copy in a heartbeat!

i'm researching a good pair of mics to buy for some low budget indie projects, and dang it if the oktava mk012 doesn't keep coming up. hmmm. gonna have to find some sound bites to hear for myself, but i think that's the way i'm headed.

by the way, what kind of sound difference is there between the mk012 and the mk012a?

also, i could use a little help in deciding whether to go with the matched pair with just one type of capsule listed at $376 on sound-room, or to go all out and pick up a matched pair with all 3 capsules listed for $659.

i've read several posts that said just get the hypercardioid, you won't really ever use the other two. that would be cool, because then i could use the difference in $$$ and almost have enough to clear 2 Rycote windjammers ($70/per).

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=8986&A=details&Q=&sku=322367&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

and 2 Rycote BBGs ($139/per)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=8986&A=details&Q=&sku=322366&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

When exactly would I want to use the other two capsules? Will the hypercardioid capsules do the job to mic instruments as well? (probably just piano and accoustic guitar)

I know one could drop a lot more cash for every specific situation, but like most people, I'm on a small budget. The mk012 sounds like it will really be a great all around mic for what I'm going to do with it, I guess my big question is should I pick up all 3 capsules?

By the way, the majority of the use for these mics will be film dialogue and ambient sound. That's where they will pull their weight. Instruments come second.

(I think that may answer my own question)

Thanks!

Yep, looks like you've pretty much got it covered.
Re: matched pair: most will agree that it isn't absolutely necessary; you'll be fine to buy one complete set-up now (mic, BBG, etc.) and another later, for instance.
Matched pair might be worthwhile for ambient ORTF, etc. but for anything else you should be okay with "just" two regularly purchased mics.

thanks vidled. i appreciate the feedback. as far as the other capsules go, what are some good examples of when i would use them?

Many here (Ullanta excluded! :)) who have all three would probably say they use them about something like this:

Hyper 80% of the time
Cardioid 15% of the time
Omni 5% of the time

All non-scientific of course...and probably not all that accurate anyway.

By the way, there's other microphones out there too that are GREAT. You'd also want a good shotgun mic, for instance...

Another strong vote for the Octava here. On a recent shoot indoors I tested the Octava and a Sen MKH416. The 416 just didn't cut it (not sure how to describe it best - the reflections resulted in an echo?). The Octava not only didn't have these characteristics, but it sounded great. Of course different mics for different locations....regardless the Octava impressed the hell out of me.

I'd been convinced that I'd save up for the Schoeps...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...s&Q=&sku=377424&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

...as a replacement for the Octava, but now I'm not so sure. One thing is sure, the Schoeps is less of a priority.

Matt or anyone else out there...you couldn't point me in the direction of an Octava v Schoeps comparison? Or perhaps one those mid range hypers (blueline?) v Octava?

If you do put out a dvd, I think it'd go well. Maybe add a few of those mic comparisons and it'd sure take the guesswork out of a lot of people's decision making.

oh yeah. i actually have the rode ntg-2. i love it. can't beat what it gives you for the price.

Vote +2 for me for the oktava also. This past saturday I shot a video of my band in a club. Due to limitations, the camera was about 4 feet from the stage, maybe 5-6 feet from monitor speakers and stage speakers. The oktava with the -10db cap performed amazingly. It was almost startling to hear how much detail was picked up in such a loud and noisy environment.

Actually, though it says "shotgun shootout", if you go to the yellow sticky at the top of this audio section and follow the link, you'll get to hear examples of both of those mics!

Slim,

One really good thing about sound-room.com (besides the DV coupon code) is that they will help you to get a match to an existing Octava later, so you don't have to get a matching pair right away. Also, StMad, not sure why you would try a comparison between the 416 and the Octava...there is little overlapping usage.

thanks ptalsky! i did not know that. you just saved me about $500 including the setup i need to get with one mic.

thanks!

by the way, can someone recommend a good place to pick up a Rycote BBG and Windjammer setup? I found it at B&H for $139 (BBG) and $70 (WJ), but I've seen several posts that mention lower prices, but not where to buy. I would like to A) find a cheaper price and B) not have to buy from B&H. I have had a few bad experiences there lately.

also, what size bbg do i need with the oktava mk012? the 25mm?
