Go35Pro Footage

You're fine man, I just wondered what the deal was. Maybe you just had a bad day yesterday. :) I dunno.

One thing I've noticed, and Jim probably won't be back for a while to talk about this, is the grain pattern. It's very different than any other I've seen before. Wonder if it's glass or what. I don't expect Jim to share his trade secrets, but it is an interesting GG or screen or diffuser.

I'm new to the whole 35mm adapter talk. I've read almost all the discussion about Jim's product and I'm a little confused as to what is meant by the GO35SD being "static?" How does it differ from the PRO in this regard? And is there any test footage of the SD ($206) version on the site? All I've seen is footage from the PRO. Also, any word on when these products are going on sale through Jim's site???

Thanks

Mikequill,
A static adapter doesn't have a moving focus screen. Some adapters have a spinning or vibrating screen to try and eliminate any grain. Jim's adapter doesn't move, so any grain you see would be stationary. But Jim's screen does a nice job without moving.

i believe both versions are static but the Pro offers better performance.

Both adapters right now are static. I think he talked about making the HD version with a moving GG. The Pro version that he is bringing out is static, as is the SD ($209) version.

To go back on my word a bit about "the next time you hear from me," so as to avoid confusion -- the SD and Pro are static, and design of both is finalised.

Parts are arriving May 1st, so I will have the new site along with the pre-order system setup late next week and things will begin rolling once that site is live. It's looking pretty great already, but will need the arrival of the parts to finalise the experience -- it desprately needs shots of the final adapter.

The Go35HD will feature a moving mechanism and it's looking like a release date of 6-8 weeks from now is fairly realistic.

I might post a few things here and there up until the site goes live but for the most part I'm busy right now tying together the final loose threads. I have all the logo submissions in a zip folder and will upload that over the weekend. The official word on the finalists is:

1st Place: Min Lee
2nd Place: Thomas Cerroni
3rd Place: Q. Manning

However, all participants will receive something cool in return for their efforts!

Alright -- it's back to work for me :)

Looking at some of the footage from the $209 adaptor, the image looks a little "murky." I base this from the website footage which is all natural light. If one were to light shots well, would you be able to get a nicer, less murky, picture with the $209 adaptor??
Mike

yes, it will do fine. The audience wont even see "faults" of the Go35standard, only you will cause youre looking for it.

and i quoted faults, because i dont believe the 35 adpters have faults anymore. i just think its a new way of crafting an image.

Make up your mind. Do you want to compare them or not? It was yourself and Jim who kicked off the whole G35 comparison talk a couple of pages back when you said "i think Jim has just about matched the G35 for half the price" And Jim said it was aimed at the same people excited by the G35, and he didn't need to buy one cause he had made one. I'm not a G35 fan boy but I have yet to see an adapter with bokeh as good, which has nothing to do with colour correction.

ASG-- are you the guy who built G35? Can you tell me your website address? I really like the go35 but you suggest that your adapter is better. What is your website so I can see some footage. You mentioned that you want to do a 35mm adapter shootout against the go35, when will you be doing this? ALso what is the price for your unit the G35? Is it as reasonable a price as the go35?

Thanks

The footage looks good... very good. I do see a fleck of something in the upper third of the image... and the first third vertically... so upper left side. I've heard others talk about dust being an issue... so how do you get around this? Is the current adapter basically sealed so that the ONLY dust you have to manage is at both ends?

I recently had the opportunity to use a Letus flip for a week or so... and the one thing that I became aware of is that "dust management" is a factor... not a deal-breaker, but a factor. Racking focus and seeing various flecks of crap come into view can be distracting.

Like I said... not a deal-breaker... and the footage looks excellent. What I admire the most about your DOF is the simple configuration. The one I was using required some attention...

One other note... man I wish you guys would tripod these sample vids. I don't think you're sending nearly as powerful of a message when the cam movement doesn't suit the experiment. I don't mean the 24 style floating cam... I mean the slight flinching.

Oh and yeah, the Bokeh appears to be excellent on the DOF lens combo... the highlight on the sunglasses goes from a uniformly bright and diffuse disk down to a focused 6-point star... indoor lighting may show something else, but I doubt it... and that's good.

Dust:

There's a combination of problems you're going to see with the beta unit footage, one of them being dust. In many of the clips, shot with my GL1, the dust is actually from the interior of the lens on the camera, and has nothing to do with the adapter. Otherwise, many of the pieces for the beta unit, used as reference points for relative focal lengths and whatnot, have been sitting on my workbench or in and out of use for a couple of years now, so they have some visible marks and accumulate dust through assembling and disassembling the rig. I know for a fact one of my tubing segments used in the beta is not anodized and is instead painted black -- so that each time I changed an element, little flecks would come off the threading and likely land on the optics.

The final product units will be assembled from pieces shipped in sealed containers, handled with some good optical assembly practices. I'm even purchasing a small vacuum assembly chamber that is basically a portable "downdraft" cube in an effort to keep things absolutely spotless. The final release Go35Pros will have an optical grade acrylic "dust and smudge shield" protecting the GG at one end, and will be completely sealed at the other.

Otherwise, you will pretty much need to check your adapter on a field monitor before shooting in order to be absolutely certain of its cleanliness at both ends -- just a good practice over all using any adapter. I'd highly rec using the Varizoom 7" TFT screen at a minimum.

Thanks for your supportive comments :)

PaPa: I owe you and others an apology and you have it from me, sincerely. I checked mail, have your message, and it along with messages from a bunch of people are aside in a "respond to" folder. I've been planning on writing a sort of generalised response with some follow-up specific responses, but have not had the time. I've got a night job in a restaurant and with the planned walkouts this week I wasn't given my expected day off, so I haven't had as much time to get to everything as I'd like.

Beta units should be going out end of this week, early next. As for the release product, I have the first run of 100 sitting here in some big boxes, but some last minute corrections need doing before I feel comfortable selling them. On the downside, it means another delay, on the upside it means a better final product for anyone interested.

More updates soon -- the new site is almos ready :) Give me and the web guru another week or two and it will go live.
