Gloves...

Now that the weather is starting to get cold here in the Philly area, what are some good gloves to wear when shooting in the cold? I have tried everything from Thinsulate to Isotoners. Can't seem to find the right kind of glove that I can wear and still operate my camera. I cannot stand cold weather so I am not even going to consider those fingerless gloves.

Is SETWEAR gloves good enough to wear out in the cold? I know they are mainly used for handling hot lights on a set or in a studio.

Re: Gloves...

Here in Colorado it gets cold too and I was thinking of trying a pair of the gloves that the NFL recievers use. Got to be good in the cold with enough tactile 'feel' to catch the ball. I always thought that the Setware gloves were just plain ole leather.

Re: Gloves...

Hasn't been too bad up there lately. Spent some time in St Paul last winter. I thought it was pretty mild.

Re: Gloves...

I always wear fingerless gloves. That way, I can easily access my camera controls. Use hand warmer pads in your pocket to keep your fingers warm...

No, you're right. I'm just a whiny bastard. I'm also slightly paranoid about taking my DVX out in the cold. I've only had it for a couple months, so I'm still overly protective.

Re: Gloves...

up here i had mine out once in about -14 (-24 with wind chill) last year .. i just didnt wear gloves.. the downside of doing so was that the camera was got so cold i couldnt even manage to hold it very long. and even when i could, i couldnt move my fingers much to run it. ..it took me about 2 minutes to change the scene file once, and then i decided it was a wrap. ive been frostbitten before. many times, and its not fun.

the next day i wore thin winter gloves and just whipped them off quick to hit little buttons, but they were thin enough to be able to work the focus and zoom fine with them on.. hands were a little better off then.. every second i could i put the cam down, and stuck my hands in my jacket pockets. the hand warmers disjecta reccomends are VERY nice!

Re: Gloves...

Alright you cry babies! It does not get much colder than it does up her in Winterpeg! Bill is right, the football gloves are by far the best option. There are lineman glove that have a bit more padding as well, believe me it makes a difference from just the thin reciever gloves. And just keep bit furry mits in your pockets for when you have a few free moments with your hands. And if you are REALLy sucky, there are always those hand warmers. I hate the cold, I really have to move.

Re: Gloves...

The ones with the top folding work pretty good. I have used them with film cameras, but not the DVX.

Re: Gloves...

Ok Brasil has it's good points, babes in itty bitty bikinis. Dated a girl from Rio - kinda like a Ferrari - terrific looks - but too high maintenace.

Re: Gloves...

Ok, get the Lowepro fingerless gloves with the fold back mitten and put a handwarmer into the fold back mitten flap. When you close them up.... ah warmth. also you can wear thin glove liners under the mitten part just to keep your skin from being exposed to the air. depends how much dexterity you need. I have worked all day on NYC Winter exteriors for years using this method...
it actually made the difference between possible and impossible for me at times.

Re: Gloves...

Just wondering if the cold weather is bad for the camera? I live in florida so I wouldnt have anytime to test out the camera in the cold. I will be in NY this winter so I was just wondering what to look out for.

Re: Gloves...

The colder the camera, the more likely you are to experience drop outs. I know Mike Donnis lost an entire day's worth of footage because of drop outs. I believe the next day he took it inside every half hour to let it warm up, and it fixed it. He would be a good person to ask.

Re: Gloves...

I definitely did lose a day's worth of shooting. As often as is reasonable, take the camera inside for a bit to let it warm up. I did it every hour for a half hour, and as TC said, the footage was fine that day. If you're ever taking a break from actual shooting, I'd use that time to warm it up - that way it'll guarantee you did what you could.

(and it IS Donis, but at least it's PRONOUNCED Donnis ;D)

See Terry! I was just speaking phonetically.

Isn't it weird that phonetically isn't spelled phonetically?
