Glossy or Matte LCD?

I'm going to buy a MacBook Pro next week and there is no Apple store near me so I can't go and see by myself what's best. Any suggestions before I order one on their website?

I'm selling my PowerMac G5 with the Production Suite to buy the MacBook Pro but I would like to know if I can copy the CD content on another computer by dragging all the files and than burn them on a DVD so I can install FCP on my MacBook Pro. I won't have the original CDs when I'll receive my MacBook Pro and no money to buy to Suite again for the moment.

I am not sure about dragging it onto a DVD, though my guess is you can't. You could use Carbon Copy Cloner and copy the entire Hard drive onto another drive (like an external drive) and then re-copy that drive onto your new computer. But I am not sure if you can copy only specific programs with CCC.

Technically, you do NOT want glossy to edit video with. It messes with the colors, etc. Matte will give you a look closer to the original footage. Even Apple has posted some info somewhere in their support section about Matte being needed for video editing, glossy for end users who play games and surf the net, as the glossy "enhances" what you see on screen in a way you don't want for video.

And no, you can't just copy over files and have Final Cut work. You have to use the Migration utility to move all your stuff from one Mac to another, or install from the DVDs (which is always best).

Will Migration allow me to transfer my stuff from my mac to a PC and then to my MacBook Pro because I won't have MacBook Pro until I have the money for me G5... When you say install from the DVDs can I copy my original DVDs of the production suite to my HD and then burn them?

Thanks for the comments on the matte I'll go with it.

No, it only works Mac to Mac via firewire. Don't know what advantage copying the DVDs to a hard drive would do. The installer may demand to want the actual DVD. A lot of this stuff is installed and writes files that refer to your computers ID numbers. It's an anti-pirating thing.

Glossy's still seem weird to me. I have the G4 which is Matte i suppose, and its good for what it does. If you want to be all flashy and cool, go for gloss.

Are you not able to just sell the G5 without the cd's because the programs are already installed, and just re-install them on your new comp?

Apple's glossy is like no one elses, almost like it's kind of in-between. It's worth checking out before you buy.

I edit most of the time with an ACD 23" and just got a Pana bh1700 as well both connected to a Matrox MXO.

I wouldn't say that video looks that much different on the glossy screen that it's unusable for editing, 15" screens just show less detail to begin with either way.

I had a glossy MacBook - it was fine, but I've since sold it and got a MacBook Pro with a matte screen, and it is superior for more accurate video and graphics.

MacBook glossy and MBP glossy are not the same screens, if the MBP had the same glossy screen as the MacBook I would have stuck with the matte as well.

Like I said, even Apple officially states the matte screen is for video and grahics professionals, and the glossy screen for gamers and Internet surfers. Glossy does not give the acturate image you need to deal with video. I'd get a screen that does the job as it technically needs to be done, not one that makes my image falsely look better.

FWIW I have 3 monitors I view video on: the 15" MBP glossy, an ACD 23" and a Panasonic BT-LH1700W. The 23" and the Panny are connected to an MXO.

Neither of the Apple monitors display color accurately and as far as the video itself goes only the 23" provides pixel for pixel viewing.

But since neither of the Apple screens can touch the Panasonic from a pure picture quality standpoint, I'm not sure I understand what Ben is stating about glossy screens making one's video look better then it really is. I'd have to say that honor goes to the Panasonic!

Matte screen definitely. If you ever need to use your lap in the field you will appreciate the matte. Glossy is great for in cool for in the lab but still it won't give you the raw truth for viewing.

That's just my opinion.
