Hi everybody, i was wondering when you have your Glidecam 4000 Pro perfectly balanced with the DVX100 on, how many metal plates do you have on the front and on the back?

I know it can depends on the accessories you have on and all but it would certainly give me an idea. Thanks.

Re: Glidecam 4000 Pro Question

Have you had any success? I just bought one, and am trying to figure the same thing out

Thanks

Re: Glidecam 4000 Pro Question

I just setup an 8000 which is virtually the same design except for the handle and the base plate is a piece of channel aluminum not flat stock.

And a couple of weeks before that I built a diy stabilizer thats a similar design.

I had to have the camera mounted on the top plate in one of the "left rear" holes.
I wasn't able to get it perfectly balanced with those big lunky washers they sent (can't remember right now how many are on there) I had to dip into a washer assortment I had amassed for the diy stabilizer. You can use any old washers, or just go to Lowes and stock up. FYI, pick up a couple of the washers that are wide with a skinny center hole (carriage?) this will keep things nice and secure.

If it's like the 8000 you;ll need to add a couple of the steel plates underneath the camera body. Calculate the weight of the camera with accesories, lenses, etc and add the right number of weights as per the instructions.,

The balancing part is a tricky, tedious job to get it right.

If the 4000 came witha jig to rest the unit on while balancing, use it. You could easily spend 30-60 mins with just minor back and forth adjustments. You want to shoot for that ~2 secs or so that it takes the device to right itself from a horiz position.

You can also move the weights around on the screw to make minor adjustments, just make sure they are screwed down tight and don't go swinging around.

This part just takes a lot of patience and tweaking. Don't cheat and get it "close enough" cause it really will make a big difference in the quality of results.

Good luck.

Re: Glidecam 4000 Pro Question

This has been asked a thousand times before I know but there never seems to be a definitive answer. Is this an effective stabalizing device? I'm looking for a good one to do some work that requires lots of short takes so I'm not too concerned with the body mount issues.

I tried the steadytracker but that is useless. Does the gimbal really make a difference in the Glidecam. It sounds good in theory.

Has anyone used the Glidecam 4000 and gotten what they were expecting and, if so, any chance you can post the results somewhere on this site?

Thanks,

Steven
