glass filters vs plastic filters ???

hello all.
i am about to buy a 4x4 vocas matte-box system...
the camera place i am getting it from recommends formatt glass filters, but they are a ton of $$$!
anyone used plastic filters? (they are way cheaper - about 10% of the price).
i'll spend the extra $$ on the glass filters if they are that much better... but i need an honest opinion from someone who has used both.
thanks.

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

Why spend $3400 on a camera with a Leica lens if you're going to put a $10 POS in front of it?

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

cause i've run out of $$ !!!
camera,tripod,mattebox,follow focus,lighting... i'm at 15grand. no more $$ left !!! that's why! :'(

Even so, if you put a piece of crap in front of the lens, your footage will more than likely be crap. There are plenty of places to save money, but never on something that's between your camera and your subject.

I'm not trying to berate you, honestly! I understand your position. You're just better off waiting until you can afford good filters.

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

why not vocas?
i want side flags and quality.
the guy at the camera shop said vocas is very high quality - same as chroziel, etc..
judging from your question, you think otherwise... please enlighten.
thanks.

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

Sigh

So quick to judge. No really. I was just curious. I had never heard of them before.

You are enlightened now. :)

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

david,
in your posts, you never ditrectly answered my question, you just beat the p!ss out of plastic filters. as i have never used plastic (just 72mm glass) i am asking this question... so, what, pray tell, is the visual quality difference between plastic and glass? if glass were 100% super-dooper paratrooper, then what would plastic be? 10%; 20%; 30% ??? is plastic somehow imperfect? does it look "blurry" or like a cat has puked on it, as opposed to glass? specifics please.
p.s. - what do you use?
thanks! 8)

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

They're more prone to scratch, even from slight abrasions. They're more prone to expand/contract with the temperature, which can distort the image. They're more prone to warp. They're more prone to imperfection in the fabrication process. And yes, really cheap ones can be hazy. To name a few things.

Personally, I don't really use that many. I have a few from Canon, Tiffen, and B+W. I generally prefer to shoot clean (this has all sorts of pros and cons by itself -- different topic), but I use polarizers and grad NDs.

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

a grad nd and polarizer are exactly the two i got a price quote on...
speaking of a grad nd... which stop (s) do you use? i was thinking of getting a .6 (2 stop). but am thinking maybe a .9 might be more practical... what do you think?

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

Simply put, glass is going to give you an increased optical image over plastic.

Re: glass filters vs plastic filters ???

As with anything, it depends on what you're going to use it for. If you're going to doing a lot of shooting with a really wide range of luminosity (say, extremely bright sky above while shooting into a dark woods), you may need more stops.

Indeed. And superior image quality is what the DVX is all about.
