giving still photos a "3D" look

i am starting to see this alot...still photos, or even freeze frames of video, that seem to have each image in the shot on a diiferent plane, so they appear to be separated by physical space.

anyone know how to do this? i assume it's a post effect.

thanks

Cut them out in photoshop, fix the background to fill in the blanks, and composite them in After Effects with a 3d camera. Badaboom.

thanks kai.

worked great just from photoshop. didn't even need to use ae.

here's a trick for anyone who doesn't already know:

i used a jpg of a surfer on a big wave, in photoshop i cut out the surfer and board, filled in the background using the "clone" tool, and saved them as separate files. make sure you save the foreground cutout on a transparent background.

compositing was done in fcp, background on v1, foreground on v2. i had the surfer move to the right slightly as the whole picture slowly zoomed out. looks great. if you want to see it, tell me how to post it and i will

thanks agin kai.

if you're using fcp5, you don't have to bother with separate files. just save it as a psd with layers and it'll open as its own sequence, with a v track for every layer.

using the 3d camera in ae will let you get a bit fancier- your perspectives and stuff will be realistic, as opposed to "fudging it" with scale and position keyframes in fcp.
