I'm going to be shooting a short film this spring and the story involves a little girl who's shadow is red. Does anyone have any ideas how I can achieve that in camera? Will it have to be done in post? Any suggestions on how to create that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
This would be something you'd have to do in post, most likely using animated masks to isolate the shadow, then changing the color. This would be a time-consuming process.
Yeah, a shadow is an absence of light. You can't color something that isn't there from a practical perspective.
You could light the scene so that there is NO shadow and add it in post, maybe by CGI. Also, some effects apps (like Commotion) have a shadow tool where you can add a shadow that wasn't there, and it will follow the subject. However, you'll have to greenscreen the person.
AE would have the capability of cloning in a shadow (any colour) and it would track your subject. As the other say - time consuming but do-able.
You will see coloured shadows in stage lighting sometimes. Stage lighting guys use more strong coloured gels than film guys. Go talk to them for info. They also achieve sharp edge shadows by the use of profile spots and these could be handy for your project (or else use fresnels and pull them back along way).
Yes, I would strongly suggest talking to some stage lighting guys about your problem. They can do amazing things. I'd rather not have to do it in post.
If you shoot in a studio environment for instance, you fill your shadow with the color you want and everything in the shadow of your main light should be that color, I did that but for a photo shoot and it was perfect. It always depend of the kind of light you will use too for the best result. A light with high contrast will be better for sure and you have to control all the spill over with black flag. For a moving subjet it can be much more difficult to do, however.
