Gitzo Mountaineer Tripod?

I need an ultralight tripod for my backpacking podcast, BeautifulPlaces.tv

I am looking at the Gitzo Mountaineer tripod with a fluid head.

Gitzo Mountaineer

Do you think it will work, or do you think I need to go with a more beefy tripod? I have an HVX200. I need smooth movement and stability, but the camera already adds enough weight and I can't use a tripod over about 5 lbs.

If you know of another tripod, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Tony

the legs are fine, but thats a still camera head. its specs sound ok, but id gamble that if you try to lock it off at a 45 degree angle it will either slide or break.

Carbon fiber Gitzos are hard to beat, I have two of them. For a light weight head that offers "some" smoothness, put a Bogen 503 head on there. However, it's still not going to be under 5lbs, that's a highly unrealistic weight limit for a video tripod that will allow any kind of quality camera moves.

A better alternative may be to hire a sherpa or have a buddy carry the tripod. ;-)

I own the Gitzo Mountaineer and the legs are definitely good. I do not know about the head yet as I have yet to really test it. I have attached the HVX to it and it seems pretty stable, though I am going to be very cautious with tilting it as the mounting plate is very small - it does seem to grasp tightly, but I do not know when/if it will give and the camera will slip off. I'll be testing it this weekend and will try to post here again to let you know if I had any issues.
