Giant Squid omni + H4n?

If I understood right, Giant Squid omni mono lav mic needs some kind of power (not the H4n's phantom) to work?

"some kind of power (not the H4n's phantom) to work?"
- 'Plug-in Power' (technically, bias current) is needed to power the mic if it has a 3.5mm plug and no in-line battery module. Most recorders (and cameras) with this type of mic connection have this.

I can't get the EXT MIC or LINE to get the mic going, and the plug in power is on...

If you can elaborate, maybe we can offer suggestions.
Does it work in other recorders? "LINE" would not be expected to work.

"I can't get the EXT MIC or LINE to get the mic going, and the plug in power is on"
That's like asking. " I can't get my car to start, there's gas in it.. whats wrong"?

The mic is brand new and I don't have any other ways to test it now. Regardless of H4n's "Plug in power" option on or off, the mic is dead when plugged either into EXT MIC or the LINE channel. I've sent the mail to Giant Squid, waiting for reply.

I get ASIO error when trying it on my PC, I'll try it later on iMac. I don't have any other lavs to test H4's plug in power...I guess I'll have to borrow somewhere, but I hope the Zoom isn't broke, I took real good care of it and it doesn't have much hours on it anyway.

I have three Giant Squid omni lavs and they all work with my H4n so long as plugin power is enabled in the menus and they are connected to the 3.5mm socket on the rear of the H4n.

Interestingly they also work when connected to an XLR socket on the H4n if I first connect a Sennheiser CL100 XLR to mini jack cable to the H4n then use a connector to connect the lav cable to the senny cable IF I enable phanton power in the H4n :- ) That Sennheiser cable is one that comes with the G3 wireless kit.

Do you have a camera you could test the lav with instead of the H4n? It should work when direct into a 5DII and most consumer camcorders with 3.5mm sockets.

i just got an email from the Giant Squid, he said the mic should work with Plug in Power on....but it doesn't. So now I have to see if my H4n is faulty or the mic.

Can I give the mic a try on iMac?

Well...put another set of batteries (even tho the batt. indicator was 3 bars) and the thing works

:/

As for the mic itself, from the little testing I've done, the Squid sounds very, very good.

Great news Tom :- )

I make regular use of the battery conditioning function on the Maha C9000:

Its slow but at least you know you can rely on the cells afterwards. I have three of them so i can do 12 cells at a time.

The Giant Squids were a well kept secret but then he did build up a backlog. He has extra staff now so the turnaround should be good. I love 'em. Recently I ordered a 4th one this time the white version to hide on white shirts jackets etc.
