Giant Squid Lavs

Okay you guys. Hopefully one of you knows the answer to this because Darren (giant squid) does not have a clue.

Can I hook his unpowered mic into my DVX100? It would require him to put on an XLR connector, which he can do. But he started giving me all this techie stuff about voltages, etc, and would not commit to it working or not. Basically he said that the camera cannot put more than 10volts on the line or it will fry the mic. I didn't even know the camera would put voltage on the line unless I was running phantom power (but I guess that makse sense).

So have any of you plugged a giant squid mic into a DVX? Does it work okay? Or do you know what the voltage is on the mic-inputs of the DVX100a?

(It's a great little mic for $25, and I have one for my iRiver. Just thinking it makes sense to have all the lavs match.)

If anyone has comments / suggestions about different lav mics to use, please jump in.

Lav mics run off a different voltage than condensor mics, so just putting a regular ol' XLR connector on the end of the cable won't work. You will need either a power supply for the mic, or a phantom power adapter for it. Usually these are mic specific, so you need to see if the manufacturer of your lav makes one for your mic.

Okay Dave, Thanks. This particular lav mic doesn'y have a power supply, but GS does make some with them. It sounds like I need to forget the unpowered mic for use with my DVX. Too bad, I am getting the opinion that the less batteries the better. :)
