Picked giant squid because of the rave reviews and pricing... havent heard of these guys but im open to any alternative. The h4n has phantom power for 3.5mm so any 3.5mm Lav that would be good under the clothing would be awesome.
What I need is a good lav for doing hidden stuff like this
I know the equipment they used for that video is a lot less quality than what im looking at... at the time of this video they were using a olympus ME-15 and probably just their phone. I do similar stuff and am looking for better quality.
So I have the H4N for my pocket, just need a good lav for such situations.
and I have At803s for interviews (big power module not convienient for hidden stuff like this)
The OST mics have a XLR /Phantom Pwr. adapter available w/your choice of input connector. For instance if you got a mic for the Sennheiser G2/3 it would have a 3.5mm plug which would work directly plugged in to a device w/ 'plug-in pwr.'.. Or using the XLR/ PP adapter for XLR PP inputs. A G2/3 could be added later on as well.
The H4N has plug in power, so I assume I wouldn't need any adapters or accessories. Doing a little bit of reading it seems the OST-801 would be the best for under clothing recording. Might be just what I need.
The OST 801 is good for using under clothes. A vampire (Dracula) clip would be a worthwhile accessory as well. Get a few as they can be lost easily. Noise-free hidden mic mounting is another skill-set all together.
You would not necessarily need a XLR/PP , the 3.5mm inputs likely sound the same as the XLRs. (awful)
Compared to high-end mic preamps, the inputs of small, inexpensive, mass-market recorders like the H4 are not held in high regard.
OTOH, for simple speech or ambience or transient music recording, they are adequate. And probably better than the mic preamps in most camcorders.
Why awful?
Awful compared to high-end mic pre amps pros are accustomed to. Functional, but mediocre quality.
Some call them Dracula clips, others call 'em Vampire clips. The twin stick pins resemble teeth. A common usage would be inside the neck hem of a tee shirt.
