Do a search for more suggestions - I remember a thread on this about three months ago.
In-camera, you can easily pull a partial-apparition using the Pepper's ghost technique, with the camera shooting the background plate through a piece of angled glass and the apparition placed against a black background off-axis in its reflection.
Disneyland uses these effects in the Haunted Mansion in realtime - think of the dancing ghosts in the ballroom that fade in and out of sight. A link to extensive BTS on how they do it here.
Others have suggested shooting ghosts as foreground plates and compositing them with transparency reduced to about 15 - 25%.
