Ghost/spirit transference ?

Writing a short short script now to make my very first short short (3 minute) to film this autumn. I need to have a scene where it is implied or whatever that a ghost/spirit from a grave transfers to an actor standing by the grave, switches places with the alive actor. After the transference, it is the same actor, I just need to give the audience the illusion or impression that some spirit transference has happened. Even black particles moving out of the grave to the man would work, etc. What would be the simplest way to do this? Affordable F/X software? I am willing to spend $100-300 on software that would do it if needed. Will be using Sony Vegas Pro as my video editor. Or could I just outsource the task to someone for the same budgeted price?

Particle Illusion will certainly do that type of effect, it does wonders with smoke, fire, explosions, fog etc, plus some deeply wierd particle emitters such as storms of dollar bills or musical notes. A white mist travelling across screen from one actor's head to another should be pretty easy, presuming the camera and actors are still.

I believe After Effects also does this kind of thing, but is much more expensive (and powerful, it also does a lot of other stuff.)

If this is a one-off shot nd you're not generally interested in the ability to produce this type of effect yourself for future films, you're probably better off paying someone $100 to do it for you. I consider something like Particle Illusion to be an essential part of my film making.

Yeah definitely if I could just outsource it for $100-300 I might rather do that. Just a one-off shot as you say. Just good to know what can be done and for how much, thank you. Also I just checked and academic pricing looks very affordable.
