Ghost scene

Trying to figure out the best way to create a ghost effect in final cut pro. Have a scene where a dead boy is walking to a man, I figured Id keep the camera on lock and film empty scene as my template then film again with boy walking then layer over the top of the template scene and then decrease opacity. Problem is I need him to touch the mans forehead and thats going to be really difficult. Trying to figure out how to any ideas?

consider greenscreen for the ghost layer, that way you can move the ghost around the screen a little in post (presuming you capture enough ghost detail that it's edges aren't visible when you move that layer, of course). It's something I do in my animations quite a bit (although not usually with ghosts!) - it's great being able to shuffle any layer in any direction to make things line up.

But greenscreen raises a whole bunch of its own problems, especially if you've never done it before.

You could try using a green ball on a stick, to give the kid a visual/physical cue as to where the guy's head would be. Then you would composite the guy over the ball. As for the ghost effect, instead of just reducing the opacity, add a little noise, and a little gaussian blur. You might also want to drop the contrast a little, and raise the brightness a touch.
