i've read that sanding say a UV filter down and using it as a GG will work fine for a homebuilt mini35.......is it sanded with a 1500 grit sandpaper? how is the glass supposed to look? kind'a semi transparent? cause i've been sanding the living h**l out of this and it's not making a "dent"
am i doing something wrong?

yah your doing something wrong..
(using sandpaper on a uv filter as a ground glass solution)

u might be able to project the image onto it.. but you will quickly realise that there are a million scratches that will also project through.
home made grounding solutions are tough and in my opinion not worth the pain and suffering. keep searching for a dscreen or possibly just buy ground glass from one of those companies.
good luck with the adapter:)

You don't use sandpaper to grind glass. You need something like aluminum oxide grit. If you do a search you will find help on the subject.

optosigma has 50mm 1500 grit for $25 each. i just ordered one today and the sales guy was super cool. he shipped same day for me and i'll have it tomorrow!!!

Grit Carbide is an excellent way to make a very fine gg. Start with something large like 300-350 then work your way to 500 or even 800 if you can find it. The nice thing about carbide is that it is found at your local Gem shop for about $3/lb for the 300 grit and about $6/lb for the 500 grit. This stuff is typically used in rock tumblers or even comes glued on circular sanding pads for large rock polishing. It's best to use glass on glass for grinding, but i've made it work with a small circle of sanded wood to polish my UV filter. It costs about $9+tax total for the Carbide, another $10 or so for a cheap used UV filter, a few hours in front of the tele, and you're on your way to being the pround papa of a fine gg- a small price to pay indeed.

You're not going to find a lot of success at grit sizes like 300-500. That's way too big. IIRC -- 3 micron is 1500 grit.

The opal diffusers Mike Dawson had, I believe, said that they weren't worth it. The holograhpic diffusers, I think, were posted somewhere that they weren't great either.
