Getting your 16:9 video to display correctly on youtube

Hey guys! YouTube has a new feature... their Widescreen player. I was having some issues with it so I decided to play around to see how to get my widescreen footage to display properly. You'd think you could use the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.212 but that doesn't work.

To read about my findings, check out this link:

I hope this helps, even though YOUTUBE isn't the most flattering place to place your footage. It's "view in high quality" option is actually pretty good though, but it's not the default (bleh).

Anyways, again, I hope this helps!

Another question is, how do you get HD up and looking good on YouTube? What is the best format to submit?

It depends on your format. h.264 is probably best or .wmv if you're on Windows. Just remember to use a square pixel aspect ratio and render at a higher bitrate. Youtube has a file limit of 1 GB so take advantage of it.

Vimeo gives you better quality as a default though. You can switch Youtube to play at a higher quality but it's not the default.

Here's the big post I wrote about HD youtube settings: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=154352

In my professional expierence, you should never output strange PAR when dealing with comptuer systems. Different PARs should only be used to maintain compressibility (like in DVCProHD) or to maintain the highest resolution in an older format (like DVD Widescreen).

Not all PC players will maintain the correct PAR. Remember that people are playing back .mp4 files on Quicktime which doesn't have a full h.264 decoder implmentation, or on players like VLC which look for the PAR at different portions of the file, or FFDSHOW on windows players that doesn't support PAR at all.
