Getting the rights to a song.

NO CA$H

There's a song by a band called Reagan Youth that I wanted to have in the end credits of my movie. Their record label is New Red Archives and I already E-mailed the people before but I guess they didn't take me serious becuase they never replied. I'm guessing it won't be expensive to obtain the rights to a song by them since Reagan Youth are an underground band on a small record label, right? If I get the rights would i be allowed to use it forever or does it expire?

Depends on what you secure. In england there are companies that you can go through and pay per 15secs. They then forward monies to artists. I've decided to use something like this as its recognized with festivals and such, plus I've drafted endless letters directly to artists, you rarley hear back.

You'll need to search ascap.com and bmi.com and seacac.com for the song.

Those sites will tell you the publisher. Artists get crap at this point. Unless they've published their own music which most bands are too stupid to figure out.

Anyway -- you'll need to CALL the publisher and ask for syncronization rights.

There is nothing that they MUST give you (they can say no) and there is NO set cost (they can charge anything for it). That's unlike making a CD where there is/are set costs.

First thing they're going to ask you is what is your budget for the project.

Good luck
