Getting rid of room ambience?

Hey everyone,

Have just recorded a seminar and sadly my external mic has been broken for a few days so I had to use the internal mic on the HVX200. The speaker spoke quite softly so sadly when I raise the volume to compensate, the room ambience is also raised dramatically.

Hoping there is a filter or something to help with this? Be grateful for any help.

Cheers

Get to know Soundtrack well, it will be your friend in recovering the audio file, although it will take some fun in finagling. You will probably want to normalize, and then do a analysis, fix problems, and then go back, and by hand, reduce amplitude of the room ambience. You can save it, but it will take some doing.

If you're not too familiar w/ Soundtrack Pro, export a selection of the audio you want to fix or 'send to' Soundtrack from FCP. Once you're in Soundtrack and editing the audio file, zoom in and highlight an area of the audio where it's just the annoying room noise you described. From the menu, 'Set Noise Print'. Then, either double-click the entire audio or hit Cmd-A {select all}. From the same menu area, select 'Reduce Noise'.

A new dialog box will appear with a couple options, so play around. Almost every noise situation is unique and each one requires experimentation. One selection in the dialog box is a 'Noise Only' radio button. This will actually let you listen to what you're getting rid-of as you vary noise reduction and threshold.

Good luck and have fun!

There's also Bias, Inc.'s SoundSoap 2 which is okay but not as interactive.
