We are starting preprod for a 20 minute feature, lucid (Script online at www.doubleitproductions.com/Lucid.htm). This is a very surreal, dreamy movie. I am going to play around with the dvx a lot before but i am hoping to get some sugestions//ideas from you guys about getting the 'look' i want. this may not be enough info but, anyone have ideas?

Re: Getting MY look

What LOOK are you going for? Any movies or grabs you can provide that inspire you or you are leaning towards? Are you looking to get this 'in-camera' or to shoot true and achieve it in post?

I'm here to help.

Re: Getting MY look

I just spent three days trying to get a look for one scene. That's because I'm an idiot... BUT - I did get it. For me you have to see it in your mind (I spend a significant amount of time laying on the couch with my eyes closed. This means I'm working. Not everyone *coughWendycough* seems to understand this.) Once, you have it (basically) in your mind, then it's just a challenge of how to create it on video. I'm sure a lot of the talented folks here can help you with the second part (just not me, remember, I'm an idiot) but I think the first part is all you. So to second what John said, what are you seeing when the lights are out?

Matt

Your post subject says "Getting MY look" but you have already stated "this is a very surreal, dreamy movie"

Why are you asking us for "MY look" ??? You already know it in your own mind and imagination. ( You are closer to the script to than us because you are involved assumeably - aren't you ?)

I hate the term "look" in context of "give me a plug in look". The "look" should come from your own interpretation and feelings for the subject.

I have never seen any reknown filmmaker or d.p ask for a "look". It just doesn't figure in the pro world where there is pride and accomplishment in creating the "look".

It's only my thoughts on the matter so hopefully you wont take offence.

if this makes money I demand cash on the barrel head for infringement of my name!

Re: Getting MY look

Well i sort of have this idea in my head but ive never seen it before. I think it involves interesting white balance, the 35 mm adaptor and cool lighting... I want to have a very strong visual style in this movie and give it this creepy, surreal, dream like feel. I cant think of a movie that has this but maybe you guys can....?

And Lucidz- you owe ME 5 cents per post !SO ha!

Re: Getting MY look

Double_IT

NOw you're just being silly.

1. An interesting White Balance look?

What? Using a warm card? Or.................? The entire color balance of your prject can be changed in post. Are you pllanning to use purple to do the WB?

2. 35mm Adapater

Okay. Shooting on the long end of the lens; crazy DOF; I'm following you on this one.

3. A strong visual style

Even Rap VIdeos carry a strong visual style; as does films like Se7en, The Texas Chainsaw Remake....

Here is what I suggest. Look at artwork. Google a search for master paintings and see if there is not one style or painting that makes yo usay "Yeah; that's it"

This mystery look can be Chiaroscuro, it can ache of impressionism, it can be like the film 'What Dreams May Come' for all we know (Please say that's not it).

It can be 'foggy' with promist filters and soft effects and smoke like a bad 80 Metal Video; well you get the idea.

Re: Getting MY look

At this point I just dont have the vocabually to articulate exactly what I want. Looking at paintings is a great idea and I am going to do that now in hopes of explaining it. It is definitly going to have a lot of fog and wind (yah, helpful right). Ill be back after looking at some painings and see if that helps. Keep the sugestions coming :)

Re: Getting MY look

Also any sugestions of painters to look at?

Edit - I havent seem s7even forever( just netflixed it though) but from looking at stills, i think its more 'dreamy' than it (Yeah i know that doesnt help)

I dunno...the last two production meetings for me were just filled with wind and fog...

Re: Getting MY look

To add another piece to this puzzle, i think i wnat everything to have a green tint to it...

Re: Getting MY look

Da Vinci: Saint Anne; El Greco: Entierro del conde de Orgaz; Caravaggio: David with Goliat´s head (and everything from him);Pissarro: lacroix isle (island).

I hope it helps, some nice ones and you can get an idea from there... And thy are all different styles, try to be more precise.

Re: Getting MY look

Great im going to take a look at those... going to Amsterdam in two weeks so maybe ill get some insepration there as well .

Re: Getting MY look

I'd add Magritte, Dali and Munch.

BTW, a 20 min feature will be harder to achieve than any look you might possibly want... ;)

Good Luck!

Re: Getting MY look

Taubkin, Munch is awesome, and Dali! But it will be quite difficult to put n screen. I somebody does, i will follow him forever...

Double it, Amsterdam is a great place for inspiration and you will find it for sure... Try impresionists, they will surprise you...
