Getting MXF files into Premiere CS6/CC

Greetings folks,

I did a search on this site looking for an answer to this question, but came up dry, so I figured I'd start a topic here.

I'm editing on a Mac system (Premiere Pro CS6) and have some MXF video files from a client I need to get into Premiere. Problem is Premiere cannot import MXF files. Or rather, it does, but it registers there being an error, and then puts the clips together, and they look horrific in Premiere.

Since I've never worked with MXF before (either MOV, AVCHD, or MP4) what's the best workflow for getting MXF files into a format Premiere can understand?

Thanks!

This question is currently vexing a lot of people... see for example

It seems like Premiere CC will handle it, but not CS6. In terms of converting, you could try Sony's Content Browser or Catalyst Browse, but both of those convert one clip at a time, and they re-compress the video. If you just have a few clips to do, those may work for you.

Re-wrapping in an MP4 container, without re-compressing the video, would be nice, but I don't know of a nice tool which can do that. If you can hack the command line, though, I've got this working from the Sony X70 to Premiere CS6 using FFMPEG. See that thread.

CS6 is pretty old. I would strongly recommend upgrading to the newest version, which will have the widest format support.

Speaking for myself, CS6 cost me over a thousand bucks. At this point, it does EVERYTHING I want, so I'm not really ready to hear that it's time to upgrade, just because there's something shinier available. Re-wrapping X70 files to MP4 is not a huge hassle (for me).

Having said that, if there was a CS7, I'd be tempted. But there isn't. Instead, I have to pay the CC subscription FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, even if I switch to Avid later, or else lose access to everything I ever create with it. No thanks. My next NLE is not Adobe.

Except work with your media. That's one of the most critical features of newer versions.

Well, since I have a simple script which re-wraps a card's content for ingest, there's no issue (at least for me). My current workflow works, and it's actually MUCH simpler and quicker than using something like Content Browser.

And if the most critical feature of CC is support for new formats, I'm not too excited. Specially as MXF is a complete red herring, as far as I can see. Just take the contents out of the MXF and put them in an MP4, and you're set.

(OK, I know there's actually other nice stuff there -- but I don't need it enough to pay through the nose forever.)
