Getting live audio feed into Soundtrack Pro

Hi all
I have no budget for any more gear :(

I have a Panasonic AG-MC100 microphone, a HVX200, and a Macbook Pro with Soundtrack Pro and I am trying to record a voice over directly into Soundtrack Pro to use its "Multi take" functions.

I read in the HVX book (the Barry Green one) that the camera can record directly to FCP via firewire but I can't figure out what to do in the menu to make my MBP recognise the camera while it is in record mode. I assume that if FCP can take the video signal, then Soundtrack Pro should likewise be able to take the audio signal.

My tedius work around is to record to the P2 cards, import into FCP, the send audio timeline to Soundtrack, but apart from wasting huge amounts of time, I can't do the multi take editor.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

Try connecting the HVX, powering it up, launching STP, go into the 'Recording' tab, check under the Input drop down for firewire device or something... also you can try going into 'Configure Device' and see if you can select your camera under 'Audio Input> Source'.

i do something similar, but do it through FCP.

make sure the camera is in camera mode and not vcr mode and connected with firewire. then in FCP open up your log & capture window. if it says "unable to initialize..." click on the capture settings tab and under captuer/input select the proper DVCpro HD mode your camera is in. usually easiest to keep the camera in DV mode as thats probably what you're FCP log & capture method was to begin with.

change device control to non controllable device.

under the clip settings tab uncheck video. and check on preview.

make sure your camera has either a lot of battery power or AC power and set it so that it doesn't power off.

you can then use the capture now button and it will only be recording audio.

i know its not going through soundtrack pro but it saves you from having to record to P2 cards all the time and then log and transferring those.

Thanks for the ideas, but no luck. Under 'Configure device' the camera doesn't show up - I think that is the problem, the 'Audio MIDI Setup' doesn't see the camera.

The FCP method does work, except if I turn off the video, the audio goes with it for some reason.

I think I am going to have to find a budget for a USB interface, I am looking at the Behringer Usb Audio Interface Recording UCA222, and hope that will show up in Soundtrack.

Cheers.

thats weird that the audio doesn't get captured.... i do that method twice a week, at least... so yeah looks like you might have to go through a usb interface or.... hooking up to your line in going through a mic thats powered maybe? will have to go from xlr to 1/8" and i'm not sure how well that quality is going to hold up tho.

Thanks ManglerBMX, I am planning on running the mike through the camera (to supply phantom power to the mike) and then out to the USB device via RCA cables - not ideal but hopefully will be OK.

Thanks Blaine, I hadn't thought about that but it looks like it will do the job for now. I really want to use the multi-take process on STP but the FCP VO will work well enough until my USB device arrives.

I think your making an incorrect assumption. Just because FCP sees your camera as a camera (it is one) does not mean STP will see it as an audio interface (it real isn't one).

So you could record to tape or??? No money = very few options.
