I recently filmed some skating in hdv format. unfortunately the camera didn't have a working firewire connect so i sent the tapes to a friend who had an hdv compatible camera (sony fx-7). He captured all the footage fine, and has them on his computer, which is a mac by the way. Now he is trying to send me the footage over the internet and no matter which type of file he convert it into, it doesn't work with adobe premier pro, on a pc by the way. He has sent it. avi...which turned out to be just a sound file... .mp4 which played and looked great on quicktime player, but didn't work in premier, .dv which looked like the some of quality had been lost but played in premier. and .mov didn't seem to work either, it was just a white screen with sound. Can annnnybody help me??? i'm willing to purchase a video converter if necessary i just would like to know that it will definitely work before i buy it. thanks to anyone who can help...

I'm assuming either FCP or iMovie was used to capture which is where you're pretty much screwed. iMovie will convert HDV into Apple Intermediate Codec and FCP will convert it into Apple ProRes, neither of which are compatible on a PC platform. Your options are pretty limited on a PC; it would have to be done on a Mac although there's no easy way to convert all the files. You would have to tell FCP to render everything out again as an uncompressed codec which would take up a ton of space and be impossible to edit.

Best to just ask someone who has a PC and just capture again.

Ok, so if my friend did find someone with a PC to capture the footage on it could possibly work? thank you by the way.

On a PC I would just download HDVsplit which is a free stand-alone capturing software for HDV. Works great.

Ok awesome thanks man. One last question just to confirm, if he gets this HDV split program and captures the footage, will he be able to send these files to me without having to convert them? and will they work in premier on a dv timeline?

Yes, it will since HDVsplit gives you m2t files. Don't know why you would edit on a DV timeline though, it won't be in real time since you're in the wrong sequence setting.

ok, i might be mistaken. The sequence setting is just normally set up, i just thought it was considered a DV sequence. Thanks for your help, i'm going to have my friend try it out with HDVsplit and send me a test clip, i may have more questions, but i will keep u posted, thanks again.
