Getting greasy!!!

I was changing my oil today and wondered if there was anyone out there that still does their own routine scheduled maintenance on their vehicles. I get the impression that it's not many in general. Given the DIY nature of a lot of folks on this board I'm hoping for a some what more favorable response than most places, but we will see.

I still always do as much of my own work as possible. Changing oil & coolant. Changing air, fuel, and cabin filters. Rotating tires and changing breaks. Replacing bulbs and what not. Greasing joints. Basically anything that doesn't require super expensive tools.

Just thought others could weigh in and share what they do or don't do.

you know i used to, but now between work and family life I just drop the thing off and pick it up later. Now I still take the ten minutes to pop the hood and check over their work. Its too bad too, cause I really enjoy doing it I just have a million other things I enjoy more, or that just have to get done. I still try and keep the DIY spirit alive and always have a few projects going (just this morning finished up a light fixture built from the coollights parts page - for the kitchen island - you sure can see in there now!), but with limited time I try to go for really fun or crazy projects instead of changing my oil. I'm also really bad about schedules with my projects and I'd hate to put off changing my oil or any other maintenance of that sort. I think everyone should do it a few times though and be familiar with the parts of their car and how it all works.

I still change oil on occasion, but it's such a pain to recycle it that I sometimes break down and go somewhere. On the other hand, I like being able to do a synthetic oil change for under thirty bucks thanks to Wally World. Still check fluids and could do brakes if I had to. But that might all change once the kiddos arrive. Which will be today. Yeah, I'm at the hospital.

When I had my 57 Chevy PU, 69 Camaro and 70 Camaro, I'd so it myself. As well as complete engine builds/rebuilds. Ever since I've owned new cars, it's been covered under free maintanance, so I dont waste my time. I've also noticed it's not nearly as easy to get to things on imports as it is on a 350 Chevy. And as Jason said, the oil recycling was always a pain.

It's not really viable in Bklyn. I have no driveway and I think it's illegal to do that stuff in the street here. And I'm not sure where I would dispose of the oil here anyway. Regardless, prob cost as much to do that as just get the work done at the dealer.

My first car was a 57 Fairlane, and my second a 68 Coronet, and I did everything to those cars. But I grew up in So Cal, where working on cars is in the blood.

i take mine into the shop. i don't have the patience or mechanical know how to do things like changing the oil and filters. also, i'm rather lazy.

Pre-congratulations!
