getting feed from soundboard via wireless...

ok so my standard recording at a venue with a sound system is to plug my sennheiser evo-500 (the old style, not the one that just came out) plug-on adaptor into the soundboard via xlr or 1/4 inch

i have problems where occasionally the feed will be a bit distorted...

i have an audio technica adaptor that is supposed to cut the signal 10/20/30 db but when i use that it seems to cut it too much.

it seems like i'm probably missing something pretty basic but the sound guys are helpful to a point but don't really feel like spending time helping me figure out stuf and i don't have access to a soundboard on a regular basis to play around.

You should try to hard line it (use a cable instead of wireless XLR cube. I have used my wireless cube in a mult. box in the past but if you want to be sure you getting clean audio, use a cable. Also have you played around with trying to bring the audio into the camera using LINE level?

Re: getting feed from soundboard via wireless...

next chance i get i'll try that.

the problem is that often there is such a short amount of time with the sound guy/sound board

plus if it works with a wire, what do i do next?

99% of the time i can't stay that close to the soundboard and i can't run a wire across the venue.

i really wish i could get a meter that i could plug into the soundboard that would tell me what they are sending me, ie. line level, mic level etc. and then i would know what to do.

i have a friend who is an electronic guru but he is still trying to think of a way to make a meter. he says i would most likely need a full blown oscilliscope?

The soundguy should be able to tell you if they are feeding you Mic or Line level. On some systems its just a matter of them flipping a switch then telling you which they are feeding you. If you are going to have your camera in ONE location that is not near the board. Depending on the distance you may have to get a long enough cable then gaffer tape it to the floor so no one trips on it. The problem I have with wireless in a situation like that is you could run into the possibility of picking up some interference with other electronic equipment there. You may hear a buzz in your audio or static and that is why I suggest using a cable instead. I guess you change the channels on your wireless system but when in doubt use a cable!

well i have been lucky i guess, i have always used the wireless and never had static or buzzing, just a few times where the sound guy either didn't know what he was doing and fed me something other than line level, or his feed was extra hot?

i have an electronics expert friend trying to build me a small meter that will show me the leve of the output so i can have an educated guess at what it is and how to deal with it.
