Getting duplicate frames!

So! I filmed some stuff in 1080i on my camcorder. In Premier, it looks brilliant. Everything is as it should be. I started working with the same clip in After Effects and I noticed one bit that seemed to pause for a split second. I looked at it frame by frame and noticed that I was getting a few duplicates in a row! This isn't apparent when I play the raw footage in any other program. It's driving me nuts! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. There are two places in the footage that I can see that have several frames in a row that are just duplicates. What could cause this?

Thanks!

I have had the exact same problem when shooting 24p. I export from Vegas, 23.976 Quicktime with animation codec. Open and tweak in AE, export at 23.976, and when pulled back into Vegas, the footage is off. Sometimes, noticably short, sometimes the exact length, but with a duplicate frame. And this is just with 3-5 second clips.

I have found that if you export EXACTLY to one specification, and have AE interperate that exactly (sometimes this means going into the interperate footage dialogue and doing it be hand) you will get results that do not have duplicates. I've also noticed that version 7 has a tendency to do this more than 6.5.

I think it is not a software issue, but something I (we) are doing wrong in the encoding process of the footage we wish to bring to AE.

And it never happens with anything other than 24p, which makes me think more that I am exporting wrong, and therefore getting the odd results.

Just make sure everything you export is recognized exactly in AE, again, do it by hand if you have to. You may have better results.

At some point you probably brought your 24p footage into an NTSC timeline and it added in the pulldown (repeated frames) go back to your footage that is still in 23.976 and make sure you always use a 23.976 timeline.

Interesting. There are two strange things:

1. The footage I took is 1080i, 29.97 -- so even if it were converting to 24p, there shouldn't be a need to ADD frames, right? Or am I misunderstanding this process?

2. The problem is occurring even before I export with AE. I mean, When I'm just looking at the comp in the preview window as I work with the footage, I can skip through the frames and see the duplicates.

I am, however, using AE7...very curious.

Nope. brought the footage as is in Quicktime format, 23.976, and made the comp out of that the Interperet footage even recognized it at 23.976. But for some reason upon rendering, I got the extra frames. And with everything the same, there should be no reason for repeat frames.

When I went to the export options of Vegas and pretty much hand did the export and than told AE what the file was, the problem lessened.

And again, this was only with Panasonic 24p.

I've never had that problem with anything other than 24p Panasonic. If you are getting it as 29.97, I dunno what to tell you.
