getting broken Filter off

Earlier today my camera slipped out of my hands and hit the ground. Thankfully, the only thing that broke was the UV filter I had on it, but the problem is the filter is now dented and I can't get it off the lens. Has anyone had any experience with this or any tips on how to get it off?

OR, you can buy coated jar lid removal tools, in various sizes, in the kitchen utensil department of a department store. Usually quite cheep. I've used them several times

Often with stuck filters when you grip them (from the outside) you are applying pressure that makes them harder to unscrew. So a good trick is to put the lens on a rubber mat (filter side down), push down and rotate the lens around it (so there is no squeezing pressure).

This might not work though if your filter is completely deformed. If so it is possible to actually cut the filter off with needle nose snippers, you just snip the metal slowly, once you have a gash you can start pulling it back with two pairs of needle nose pliers, and repeat. Eventually you will be able to pull the filter off the thread. Some camera repair shops will do this for you.
