Getting an anamorphic style outcome

This is probably a really simple question.. but i'm about to shoot a short film on my XM2 (GL2), and i'm trying to decide the best way of getting an anamorphic style outcome. I was thinking of taping over the veiwfinder so I can roughly place shots and then adding/ cropping in premiere, or I thought of adding a letterbox template in the form of a title mix?
Either way, i'll end up using only about 50% of the shot, and I need to know that i'm not cutting anybody off! If anyone could help me i'd be grateful...

Use after effects to do the letter boxing so you can move the footage around for framing if its off. I don't think premiere lets you do that because its stuck to the same layer the footage is on. I may be mistaken with CS3 now though. Some tape would be fine. Hook the camera up to your computer and put it on VCR mode and then open Premiere and make a letter box file. It will play the file back through the camera so you can see where to mark the tape.

Altho After Effects would be the best way to letterbox the footage, you can still use Premier (+ Photoshop) if that's all you have acces to. We made a short film a few months back, and used Premier to letterbox our footage. Just go in Photoshop and make a layer containing only black bars running across the top and bottom (just make sure to get them the size you want), and then import that image into Premier. Pop that in your timeline as a new video layer, and strech it over your entire footage. By doing that, you can still adjust the position of the footage to make sure its all properly framed.

Oh, and I would use tape on the viewfinder. Use a slightly opaque tape, so that you can not only see where the frame ends, but also what you are cutting out, incase there is something you might want to include in the image.

Yeah, I just found out that you can do this. I just made chyrons for some interviews and dropped them right into premiere ftw.
