Getting a second aputure hr672s

So I currently have one hr672s. Like most of the feedback on it, I've found the light quality to be pretty good, just lacking in punch. Especially when diffused.

I like to shoot it through an umbrella, which looks great, but tends to kill the already limited output.

I know the most sensible option is a stronger fixture, but I just don't have the budget for it right now, given my situation. I've been weighing options and it seems like the best choice is to simply get a second 672s. I feel like this may be a dumb question, but is there any downside to shooting 2 lights through an umbrella to create one larger, stronger source?

Have you tried reflector umbrellas? Because you are wasting a lot of light using a shoot through diffuser.
Or maybe somehow laying two 672s inside a cheap simple soft box - at least all the light will be falling out the front as opposed to an umbrella where half of it will be wasted out the back.

Also have a look at the flex panel threads, because you might be surprised how cheap some of them are.

Have not, will check out those threads.

And yes, you're right. I am losing a lot of light currently reflecting out the back. I'll look into a reflector umbrella, or maybe a bigger softbox. I have the EZ box right now, but it's not great and only designed for one.

I was kind of in a similar situation as you... I have like 4x 672S and 2x 672W, don't like using them because they're old now - bad with thermal issues and just suck with diffusers

If you are going to use a big octa or diffuser, just bite the bullet and get a nice big light, it just makes life so much easier than constantly dealing with under powered lights.
There's just no getting around the need for powerful lights if you want to use soft sources, unless you can black out the room.

With 2x 672S through an umbrealla I was getting like 1,200 lux @ 1m.
Just one of those FL-3030As will get you that with the diffuser and it's bicolor, for $120. The bigger brother is $30 more.
2x FL-3060A for $300 and close to 3,000lux @ 1m diffused... IMO way better option than the 672S and cheaper, but no punch at all if going bare.

If you are on a budget I'd also suggest looking into the Godox SL-200W and modding it with the noctua fans - once you get the ULN ones in there it's bearable for interviews if you can post process the noise out, adds a few db to the noise floor.
Then get one of those umbrella octas with bowens mount and make yourself some diffusion material out of frosted shower curtains, that will help boost the output instead of the stock diffusion material.

You should evaluate your buying decisions more carefully. You would have two cheap, plastic lights that output less than half the light than a better built, metal construction, smaller footprint, quicker to rig, superior product for $69.00 more

Aputure HR672 $278.00 ea. = $556.00 for two lights, combined output 5,160 lux at 3.3'
Aputure Lightstorm LS 1S $625.00 = $625.00, output 10,500 lux at 3.3'

Sell your HR672, cut your losses and buy a better light.

I thought the 672s had an output of 6040 lux at 3.3'? That was what I was basing part of my decision on. Sounded like 2 672s would put out more than an LS1, at least on paper.

AFAIK a 672 is 45w and an LS1 is 120w.
They are both a similar type of fixture and form factor, so leaving beam angles aside an LS1 is nearly three times the power (and brightness) of a 672.

I still take my 672s out on jobs occasionally, but my 3x3060A Travor panels (big, soft, lightweight, cheap) combined with 2x 55w Bi-Colour CAME Boltzens (bright, well priced, well built, quiet) seems like a great combination for me for the foreseeable future.

There is a video comparing the light output and the guy found it was basically a stop brighter or double the output. He was "surprised". It might put out more total light but in terms of brightness only a stop.

It's on YouTube.

Yep, saw that one as well. I think that may be my issue... I have to re-adjust my expectations for where LED lighting is, currently. 2x as strong as a 672s still strikes me as not that powerful, which is disappointing. The 120d sounds like it has even less punch. Been keeping my eye on the 300d, but the jury is still out.

How are you liking the CAME Boltzens? They do look interesting, but read some reviews and opinions seem mixed.

The one comparison I can see on YouTube suggests 1.33 stops.
Which is in fact almost three times the power.

I've got no sound on the video so I could be wrong, but it seems to be measuring in rounded shutter and aperture numbers rather than IRE results? So the 1.33 could be nearer 1.5 and the LS1 might actually have a slightly wider beam angle? Dunno, depends how the test is done - it's certainly not a traditional lux measurement (know what I mean?).

I'll say this, my LS1 is so very much brighter than my 672's. It's a great light for it's age, even though the original power supply buzzes badly and the control box bangs around on the light stand no matter how you hang it. The remotes are useful even though they can sometimes become rather unresponsive.

Looks like someone's selling a 1K arri fresnel for $460 canadian, here in town. Maybe I should just get that.

Yeah. They are nice. The DC sections of the power cables are really short, so I'm making some 4pin mini XLR extensions using 2 core flex.
The zoom function isn't anywhere near what a Dedo can do, it perhaps doubles or triples the intensity of the spot.
Shaping using the barn doors only works at full wide and it's a very soft edged cut but a slash of light is possible.
I've bought the 55w Bicolour version and my mains power monitor suggests it's pulling approx 55w across the entire colour range.
