Getting a Lighting Sticky...

I suck at lighting. Lets get that out there. But, in my defense, I have just begun to light.

However, many of you lighting veterans have the ability to help out some of us indies who need some lighting direction in a no nonsense, very basic and primal sort of way. (i.e. 416=good. Azden=bad.) I know that lighting is a very complicated art. But, when searching for lights and lighting kits, there are aspects of lights that are tough for a lighting noob to dissect. For example, wattage. I see VERY bright lights at 55watts, but see Arris all the time at 650 watts. Whats the difference? Color temperature? How do we break down a color temperature vs. what it LOOKS like in a very digestible way??

I guess what I am asking is if ANYone who has some strong basic lighting knowledge had the time to put together a simple list of the basics that could totally help out many MANY of us. I know there are many shapes and sizes of lights, but I think that the primary information that seems to be very tough to understand is wattage vs. footcandles, color temp vs. overall look?

I mean, perhaps I am alone on this. But, I have search the lighting forum for months, and have picked up a lot of info but it is still VERY tough to grasp some of the basics.

And, if noone wants to put together a list, if you could please suggest some good tutorial books that talk to the reader like he is slow...that would be great.

Thanks all-

Rick
EDIT: Actually, the articles posted yesterday by MATTHEWC is pretty much what I was searching for. Thanks for looking...
