Get your DVX Sunshade to hold filters like a Matte Box

Hi peoples. When I was on a craze to get a matte box my mind kept thinking about getting the sunshade that comes with the DVX to hold filters. Adding those barn doors to it, is another post (haven't done it yet). I just kept thinking about that piece in the front with the screws. Why would they put that there? Why not make a sunshade thats all one piece of plastic. I think Panasonic secretly wanted us to figure out how to get their sunshade to work as a matte box. :)

Well not really but they did make it a little easy. :D

Anyway All I did was take those 4 little screws out and replace them with longer little screws and so you have that front piece that stays attached but now leaves a gap for filters (I actually got this idea from a cheapo strobe light that has a slot in the front to load those color thingys when you want the strobe light to be a different color). The photos of my alteration are included.

Here are some issues that can be easily fixed.

The first issue is my screws are too long. I'd just removed every screw from an old Thinkpad T21 (to get the LCD out) and had some tiny screws that were longer versions of the tiny screws that came on the sunshade. Ideally, they should be screws that are only slightly longer than the original screws.

The second issue is the front piece will not stay pulled out. One solution would be to find some hard spacers the screws slide through to rigidly maintain the space between the front piece and back pieces. These could be made from any hollow tube like thingys.

The third issue is that there is a gap in the bottom. Unless your filter is longer than it is tall, it will slip through the gap at the bottom. I'd use filters that stick out the sides and this wouldn't be an issue but its up to you.

I think that is it. :)

Cheers
