-Get Rich Or Die Trying-

Well at least there's Kanye.

Nah, don't like him much either. Well, he's a little more refined, but I lost what respect I had for him when he came out and said Bush hates black people.

Look, I'm not gonna derail this thread with politics, but I will say that I am not a supporter of a lot of things President Bush does. I'm actually a Libertarian. It just makes me laugh to think that here is a black man out there speakin' to issues that he knows nothing about. Very, very bad taste to make Hurricane Katrina political. I had some relatives on my father's side (black) that relocated with my father and couldn't believe this. None of them (nor I) believe that Bush hates black people. There are things that he could have done to maybe prevent such a big disaster, but it wasn't because New Orleans is primarily black. Louis Farrakan doesn't speak for me either!!!

It's all in good fun

Nice reply. I will say that my post was more of a "venting" about things in general. Rap, generally, is all about the rags-to-riches story. A story that is as old as time. Circumstances are different, so the story changes details, but the plot is the same. Only in the past, there hasn't been so much emphasis on how bad people were or the things that they had to get where they are. Sure there's a Scarface or Godfather, but rap is ALL about that--that, and drugs.

I think of everyone the same, and if I came across as isolating out black people, then I apologize. Everyone should be accountable to the same standards. But surely, you must realize that rap is primarily aimed at black people. Yes, little white thugs try to listen to it, but it is considered a cultural thing for many blacks (not by me, give me Blues, baby). I have professors telling me that rap is a cultural past time for my people--don't single me out. I've never been a slave, those were my ancestors and no one today is accountable for that. And don't ever call me nig##.

Being partially black, I have seen it from a perspective that a lot of people wouldn't. I see black people often make it a point to separate themselves. I've seen all sorts of poor people try to victimize themselves and become reliant on the system. That's not what the USA is about, that's not what the founding fathers thought of our country. Some of the most racist people I know are black. Now I do sympathize with my grandparents--they were raised before the Civil Rights Act of 64. It has even got so bad that I am often isolated when around a group of all black guys because I am white and don't listen to rap!!! Now, I'm not trying to victimize myself here (cuz that would be hypocritical), but merely pointing out that there is some very backwards thinking going on here.

This is the state of things nowadays. I really, really wish that it wasn't so.

Wow, I don't check the thread for a day or so and it gets all deep and stuff again. :)

I think a line was crossed a long while ago where the focus of rap marketing shifted to the young white suburban audience. You can't have multi-mega million dollar album sales without the crossover appeal. And it always seems that its the over-the-top, stereotypical acts (i won't call them artists) who make the biggest crossover money.

And its sad, because I enjoy the stupidity of Lil John and the like now and then, but when that's all anybody seems to latch on to, then I wish it would all just go away so some quality material can get the limelight.

And on a side note, it's not just urban music and culture getting hijacked. Just look at Gwen Stefani and her little troupe of clownish asian stereotype girls.

EDIT:

Just read that cnn article. So now I have a question for everbody: How come there are never any shootings at theater showings of Goodfellas and The Godfather? hmmmm...

There are no shootings there, but there are plenty of cars exploding in the parking lot as people are headed home.

"but rap is ALL about that--that, and drugs."

I wouldn't necessarily say Rap is all about rags to riches and Drugs. I mean there are a lot of rappers that rap about rags, riches and drugs :) , but if you think of the environment that a lot of rappers or aspiring rappers are in that's all they know. If everybody I know is poor and most people I know have never left my city or even my neighborhood I would talk about that. If I sold drugs I would rap about that because that what I know. Now is selling drugs a good thing ? No. Listen to Eminems First , Second and Third album they all have a different feels because he changed as a person. In his first album he was poor and talked about that. He talked about how crappy life was then his next album he was talking about how his life was now that he famous and retort to all the comments about him. The album after that is more political and he talking about the world. So as we can see that for a good portion of rappers their topics change as they progress as people. The key would be that they need to progress as people. As I stated in a earlier post my brother raps and I rap as well and I can guarantee that I don't rap all about rags to riches and neither does he. As a matter of fact I had to change the way I rapped because my target audience couldn't understand what I meant. Mainly because they weren't words they ever used nor knew what they meant. So it's kind of a catch 22.

Good reply. There has been some rap that my cousins have turned me onto that has a positive message. In fact, there are a lot of rap artists that send a positive message--the problem is that, that stuff isn't the "popular" stuff. Every once in a while there is some breakthrough artists that change it up a little bit, but they are in the minority. One new artist that I get a kick out of is Andre 3000. His CD is trippy!! Got some genuine good stuff on there (mostly about women).

When I started listening to rap I actually didn't like it because I thought all they rapped about was money and hoes, but after listening more and more I found that a lot of the rappers that I didn't like were actually very creative even though some of their subject matter wasn't to inspirational. I was very impressed with Big Pun even though he had just died when I started listening to him.

Now I seriously want some kind of statistics on how many people have been killed at movies, what movie it was and where.

You can't tell me that people only get shot and killed at rap movies. But that's all you hear about.

actually I like the movie. Theres no arguing that the cinematography was good, acting with most everybody was also good, but the story line opinions are, well just opinions. To each his own I say. I was already a fan of 50 before this movie, and after watching it I became an even bigger fan. In my personal opinion, the story was great and I like how it ended; right before he started to get famous. BTW I saw somewhere im pretty sure it was on the movie's website that it was one of their first movies, i dont know if it was the producer who said that or the director or somebody, but someone in the interview said yeah this was my first motion picture film bla bla bla.

Either way, happy late thanksgiving to everybody, take care, and do your thing

The City of Toronto is trying to ban 50cent from playing here due to the violence that comes with him.
Toronto this year has been in the news a lot due to the gangs and their shootings of other members including innocent people . Just recently an 18 yr old ( known to police) was shot on the Church steps during Worship.
The Mayors solution Ban him ..Ya right .
I do not like 50 cent or rap ..but to ban him is not right ..re censorship!!.
Everyone is SCAREd to step up to the plate , why ? because their afraid of being called a racist or anti Black . The Church and some Black leaders are asking our Gutless Politicians to call the army in to take control .
The Mayors solution ....Ban 50 cent...lmao ....F&^%&* politicians.
