Okay, so I've been making short films for the past two years. They're fun and all, but unless its some one punchline joke, it's very likely I will need multiple locations and multiple cameras, and multiple bottles of pain killers for this mess. Funding was a whole other story. Well, I found a solution.
It kinda sucks, but it did provide me some funds for my past shorts. I sold two lines in my shorts. Yes, I sold two lines in my short. The first time I ever did this it landed me $300. Not much, but it sure beat paying the whole $1200 that was required for this particular short.
So how did I do it? It wasn't hard, but it certainly wasn't a walk in the park.
1. I advertised looking for those wanting "unique" marketing campaigns for their products or service.
2. I sought out companies wanting desperately for some inexpensive marketing.
3. I would take their service or product and incorporate it with my script without sounding like an ad.
Example: Let's say I'm selling my book "Confessions of a Corporate Whore"
INT. LIBRARY
JANET walks in searching for JASON. She finds him at a table in deep concentration, reading.
JANET
There you are, I've been looking all over for you.
JANET gets no response.
JANET
Hello! Am I speaking to myself?
JANET grabs the book out of JASON'S hand. We now can clearly see what he is reading.
JANET
Really Jason? Do you really feel you're some sort of whore?
JASON snatches the book out of JANETS hand.
JASON
As a matter of fact I do.
JASON opens the books back up and resumes reading.
JASON
And by the looks of it, I'm not the only one.
Now, that was a little more than two lines, but you can see where I'm going with this. Not only do you help some company get exposure, you can usually get props, sponsorships in more than one area, and exposure to resources you didn't know existed. Not to mention the new ideas that will come to play once you must incorparte a few new lines in your script.
I hope this helps a few of you guys to get some extra funding for your films. Its surely helped me. I will be updated this forum with some more ways on how I get funding for my shorts.
