Generator question

Is it safe to put a generator in the back of a car (SUV) to lessen the noise from outside?

Has anyone done this or have any insight? Thank you

Yes, absoultely safe for the car's tires.
Wait! Safe for what / whom?

You don't mean run the generator inside the car I hope?

People kill themselves doing some similar things using an exhaust pipe extension. If nothing else the car will reek for years, and you will reduce its resell value by 80% in one hour. Also, the generator would eventually stop i guess for lack of oxygen.

we've put them in the back of a 3 ton or 5 ton truck and pointed the open end away from set to reduce noise. Works a little, and every little bit helps. You do have to have to door wide open and and you can't put it more than a couple of feet in. Also make sure the thing is aired out when you send in your poor best boy, or else he'll be dragged out blue...

As for putting in an SUV, I don't think I would try it, and I *know* I wouldn't use my SUV.

Ah, yeah, that seems okay.
One could also construct a rudementary sound enclosure out of gib board/drywall or similar.

The best method is to dig a hole. A hole half the height of the generator and the dirt piled up around the hole. Makes a good sound baffle, as it directs the noise upward. Just check the weather report. That hole will fill up with water pretty quick..

If noise is that big of a problem, spend the money on inverters instead of a gen.

Yes, deep cell marine/rv batteries with a good inverter is the quietest way to go. Optimas' marine (yellow or blue top) are considered some of the best. Don't get the red top ones, or any type used primarily for starting a vehicle.
You can get them at a discount at places like Costco or all over the web.

Another good brand is Concord which has its' roots in Military applications.

btw, some of these batteries are actually heavier than small generators. So factor weight into what you can handle.

Even Park approved portable gens from Honda and Kipor are still too loud for video shooting unless you build some great external sound proofing.

Do not put a gen in any fully enclosed area, especially a vehicle.

One way would be to build a lightweight custom trailer with plenty of soundproofing and airflow to house one of the popular RV oriented gens. Make sure to get the inverse cosine/inverter ones (models ending with an 'i'). They are safe to hook up to sensitive electronics. Honda and Kipor are a couple of favorites
Kipor is an up and coming Chinese brand that has been getting good reviews and is considerably less expensive than Honda for similar output.

Search the net for DYI trailer kits and materials.

Hope this helps.

Sand Bag It

Sand Bag It

In the army we would dig a hole and put the generator half in and half out and put sand bags all the way around it ,a little higher than the gen.

I think that will be your best bet. Since the low freguencys are the ones you most have to worry about, it seems surrounding it with dense sand and earth will block their travel most effectively.
