Generating Wind... And lots of it.

Ok so I'm working on a spoof disaster film about wind. It's only a short and on a very limited budget. We need to generate wind on set and I would like to get some input on what everyone thinks the best way to go about it is.

Idea's we have already thought of:

1. Leaf blowers. Problem is they are too noisy and would probably ruin audio, not to mention the power to run them all.

2. Air movers. This is actually probably our best bet as they are a little more quite than the leaf blowers, were just not sure we can procure them. (The air movers I'm thinking of are the ones you see to dry floors, you might see them in restaurant kitchens, carpet cleaning people use them, ect.)

3. A really huge fan. ( Where the hell do you even get a really huge fan?) Not to mention it will most likely not have the power we want.

So, any tips or tricks people? Help me out.

It doesn't matter what you use, they're going to mess with your audio. I recommend making sure your actors are good at lip syncing for ADR in those scenes.

Ha, yeah those are some pretty big fans. I think though that those give more of a "light breeze" than they do an epic disaster type wind...

Casalen, I think your right, its not gonna matter audio wise it's all gonna ruin it. I still just want to know the best / easiest / cheapest way to generate lots of wind.

If it's a really silly spoof, you could actually show hands holding fans next to the actors? :)

The professionals use Really Really Big Fans, and yes, they ruin any dialog recording.

A windy day is the cheap option if you live in a windy area, but wind is notoriously unrelaible and still ruins audio just like a fan...

Find somone with an airboat on a trailer. Forget audio. Tie down well. Be sure b cam captures airboat breaking loose. Should be good for the fhv prize . . .

You could also go on location to the Pribilof Islands - they have hurricane force winds around 10 times a year - gale force almost every week.

Local rental outfit has some 4 ft dia fans for rent . . worth a try.

_____

Must post footage when done !

Just get a few fans, with good output, and just toss light stuff that will blow easy, and you could throw stuff at /behind your actors, you just need hair and clothing movement to sell it for the actors. But in all cases, audio is a problem.
