"Generating Peak Files" out of control!

Suddenly, PP wants to generate peak files for every file I import. Worse yet, if I open an existing project, wait forever for the peak files to be generated, save, close, and reopen the same file, it starts the generating process all over again. This even happens if I start a new project.

I have a case with tech support, but it may be days before I hear back and I'm on deadline.

I've deleted the preferences, changed scratch discs, moved files to different discs, cleaned the cache, even cleaned my system with a program called Cocktail. Nothing has helped.

System = Mac Pro dual quad, 16GB RAM, 4x1TB hard drives.

ANY SUGGESTIONS????

I had the same issue, I made a thread, but dont remember getting any response. I never did figure out why this started happening. I thought it was because a setting I changed under preferances, but when I changed it back it still did the same thing. The crazy part is when you delete thewm, they regenerate, like a fukin gremlin. lol.

I just bought an Asus g74 laptop yesterday, and installed cs4, so i hope it doesnt start on this system to. I been using premiere since it came out, and dont ever remember having this issue. Anyone please help us figure this out, it could mean the difference between punching a whole through my screen and not. lol, just kidding. you get the point.:)

There is an option in the preferences to save media cache files next to the original.
DO NOT CHECK THIS BOX!

Somehow I must have checked this in the last few days and it appears that this is the source of the problem. When this is UNCHECKED, the program will generate the peak files (conform the audio) once upon import. If this is checked, it seems that it has to do it for every file in the project every time the project is opened.

Now that I've wasted two days on my project I need to get back to work.

That part is unusual.

You need to think of the original creation and the recreation as two separate things. The first is normal, only the second is an error.

PEK files are required for waveform display. If you delete them, PP will recreate them. That is by design.

One more comment about the "save cache files near their source" checkbox. It looks like having this checked also make the program ignore those pesky files it "requires" to render occasionally. You'll see these a lot with nested sequences and multicam edits. They are their own pain in the rear, with other workarounds, but having this box checked in preferences makes this problem far worse as well.

I moved an entire documentary over from p2 cards and it's taking a day so far generating peak files. Not a fun process. I hope it doesn't do this next time I open the project.
