General Imdb/ Film Festival Question..

I was wondering lately, do most films before getting a distribution contract get screened at somewhere like cannes or sundance for example? or is this purely to get distributors interested? As i was trying to add my film to imdb and it said it wouldnt let me unless I had a release date at either theatres or a festival :S which i dont have yet because i dont have a distributor, yet i see many films on imdb that clearly are still in production without distribution deals... I want an imdb profile of my film to increase awarness like most other film makers to increase publicity and then get a deal.. Has anyone created an imdb profile of a film before?

Cheers.

I'm not sure about IMDB and getting a profile, but I just read (and will probably read it a few more times)

"From Reel to Deal"

and I highly recommend it. It will let you know how to get your movie's name out there for the AE (acquisition executives if I remember correctly), who are the ones looking for new films to sign up for distribution deals. And also how to handle yourself if you actually create a buzz at a film fest.

And when you find out about IMDB, please post back and let us know.

Thanks,

Luis

Imdb is the Internet MOVIE database. And as you will see in Reel to Deal, your film is not a MOVIE until it's shown in front of a (paying or festival) audience. I'm on imdb, but many, many of my credits aren't, since they never made it to those kinds of audiences. Putting it on the net is no good either. In order to get on imdb one of three things must happen:

1. You are famous enough that even when you announce a new project it gets put up there whether you've started shooting or not. (public interest category)

2. Your film is shown at a Film Festival.

3. Your film is picked up for distribution, has a theatrical release, or is released direct to video.

That's it man. I know, it sucks, but it does prevent the posers from getting on there.

brilliant, thanks for the info, im on imdb as an actor so that may help with getting my film up there, then i look like less of a poser. im looking forward to reading this "reel to deal" it seems like its very popular.

Unfortunately, being on imdb in any capacity doesn't help you. The criteria are black and white. I orignally started on there as an actor as well.
