General Error.... wtf...

Sometimes I hate FCP... mostly I love her.. but .. she makes no sense sometimes..

I have a Behind the Scenes doc within my project... when try exporting to a QT DV file... it gets to 68% and gives me a 'General Error'.

Is there something wrong with the FCP software team.. why can't they at least give me some hint at what is going wrong.

I have tried saving in several spots.. so it isn't a system admin issue with permissions..

anyone have any ideas? Should I perhaps trash the FCP prefs..?

i am at a loss.. this is frustrating.. the only way I can get a clean DV copy is by exporting using Compressor.. but then it re-compresses every frame... which makes it looks like ass..

seems to only ocurr with this sequence.. I even copied into a new sequence.. same error... I am going to try and purge the render files and see what happens.. but I wondered if anyone else has this issue.

I am using the most up to date version... 5.1.4... on a mac pro...

The last time I ran into the "General Error" it was related to a bad render file. At least I think it was because after I trashed all my render files I didn't get it again.

I narrow down where the error is coming from but am at a loss to fix it..

when Isolate just the audio file and try and export.. it gives me this dialog:

Picture%201.png

I have no idea what the heck is wrong it..

it plays fine in everything I open it in.. I even tried copying the audio to a new file and it still gave me this error.

anyone have an ideas?

Do you have any other applications open? That error is saying that the file you're trying to export is in use by another application...

Close everything else... or better yet, restart your computer and see what happens.

I think your best bet is to delete all of your render files from that project, trash your prefs, rename your project, and re render from scratch. It sounds to me like its a render issue. I had it happen to me once, but my problem actually came from corrupted source file.

Hardware specs are the first thing I'd have to know to troubleshoot this. What Mac model, hard drive set up, RAM, versions of everything are you running.

Using FCP Rescue to trash your prefs, an using the Render Manager to delete ALL of the render files, running Disk Utilities, reboot, re-launch the project, do a Save As (simply renaming the project file does nothing) to a different name before doing anything else to the project, re-launch FCP from the new project file, re-render, that will do about all that can be done.

Try opening all your Capture files in QT Player, that'll let you know if any of your source files are bad, which I doubt.
