Gelling on the cheap

So I'm sure this has been covered at some point. If so, could someone please point me to the thread where applying color correcting sheets/gels to halogen work lights is best applied? Or, if it hasn't been covered, could someone give a quick read-along demo?

My main concern is the heat that's coming off the halogen work lights. Once you lower the grate in front of the bulbs, there's nothing shielding direct contact. Im assuming that the gel sheets are made to withstand a great amount of heat, but I'd assume at some point everything melts, right?

Right now I'm thinking of just using gaffer's tape and strapping the snipped sheets directly over the square houses. Is that all there is to it?

Thanks!

The best way to gel lights that throw a lot of heat is to suspend the large gels in frames that plug right into C-Stands and then put those assemblies out in front of your lights. You can source pre-cut sheets of CTO, CTB and ND gels which you attach to the gel-frames or cut off the size you need from rolls of gel.

Buying a gel by the sheet is a lot cheaper than getting an entire roll. You can make your own gel frames from cheap packing wood slats and angle brackets from home depot and clamp them to whatever kind of stand you can rustle up.

So you're saying I should build something that houses the gel sheets and then place that in front of the work light? Or I should build housing or the gel sheets and clamp them onto the work lights...?

This is what a C-Stand based gel frame looks like. Attach gel to frame and plug into C-Stand. shine hot light through so its far enough back to not melt gel.
