Gear Head for DV Cameras

Re: Gear Head for DV Cameras

Nope. The smallest one I'd think that may be available would be the Mini-Worrall or possibly the smaller Arri/Panarri head.
Don't forget that the purpose of the gear head was originally to provide silky smooth pans and tilts while supporting Mitchell cameras and others of the 200lb variety. Thus these heads are BIG and HEAVY! Their mass (and momentum) is what gives them that silk. Take that away and what you have is something like a fluid head, (i.e. not worth it, and even if one were available, most DPs would take one of those and start loading it down to make it massive and heavy again).

How about ease of transport, you ask?
Well, the use of a gear head means that both hands are busy just operating the head controls. Barring the use of pedals and other such esoterica, if you're using a gear head you have to have an assistant, a focus puller, or both and more besides if you're on a jib or a dolly. Then all your people can carry the thing and set it up...
