Hey guys, just thought I'd give you a head up about the GE line of T8 and T12 flos that you can currently buy at Lowes.

I did a shoot last week that required me to light a decent sized room in a "homeless" shelter. The lights that were in the fixtures were 4100k with a CRI of around 70-in other words, horrible! So off I went to Home Depot and Lowes looking for a solution since I had seen some good CRI lamps at both places before.

Both stores had lamps with decent CRI at 5000k (shooting on the RED and wanted to stay near the native balance of the RED's sensor), but the GE won over because of a higher CRI at a better price. So in the T8 model the GE 5000k "sunlight" at 85 CRI is what I chose. In T12 I got the GE 5000k at 90 CRI.

When I put them in the units on set I found out that those lights had FARRRR more power than the 4100k T8's that were currently in the units. In then end, I ended up using only one lamp per unit because they were so dang bright and I needed more of a dim look.

All that to say...they looked fantastic! Even with the T8's at CRI of 85 I saw no green spike in the image. The walls in the room were a sickly yellow that would really make any green spike obvious, but the lamps made the yellow render perfectly on the RED.

Needless to say, I was really happy with the lamps. The best part was that they were only $3.49 per lamp before tax. So if you are looking for a cheap lamp to use for filmmaking, I highly suggest them. They also come in 3000k and 6500k with a higher CRI.

I did a search for DIY flo's awhile back and its really amazing what you can get for cheap that are high CRI and close to the temp you need.
