Garden State

I rented this movie the other night with my girlf friend and wanted to hate it. I went and bought it the next day. Zack Braff the writer/ director/ lead actor did an amazing job. the story line was awesome, some of the scenes never really tied them selves together, so it kept you filling in the blanks. The characters in the film were all really beleivable and there was only one part in the film that the dialogue felt scripted.
Totally felt it was an awesome movie, kinda new-age flick.
I recomend purchasing a copy.
Steve

Does anyone know if it was shot on digital?
I dont remember if i saw a panavision in the "making of"

Re: Garden State

My wife bought this for me yesterday and I watched it.

Loved it. Worth the hype. Very touching and heart felt with some nice comedy moments. Well worth the time. Wonderfully shot.

Re: Garden State

..i rented this the other night. to the contrary of most peoples opinions of the film, i dont really have anything good to say about it. there was some parts that were humerous, but for the most part i thought the film was pretty pointless. far too surreal to be believable which made me not really care about any of the charachters and negated any sentimentalism the film saught to hold along with any chance of relating to any singular character. the protagonist was more to blame for his problems and mediocraty than what he tried to point the blame at, which left me caring nothing for what happend to him, and simply watching the characters wallow in their own muck for the duration of the film was simply unsatisfactory.  all in all i was dissapointed. i had heard good things.  ..just my opinion. .. i honestly wanted to like it.  perhaps i had too much hype? ..bad food that night.. who knows. oh well.

Re: Garden State

yeah garden state is getting largely reconizged ever since it came out on dvd.

I told a bunch of people to go see it when it was in theaters and every single one of them told me no.

But now everyone is telling me how good of a movie it is after they watched the dvd.

Re: Garden State

Well it was good for me cause I like "feel good movies, so I'm a sap for that sometimes.

Now that I watch it again ... The only things I liked was the cinematography and soundtrack.

Zach also broke one of the most important rules in writing and film making, and not in a good way, I'm sure you know what it is.

But hey good directorial debut for Zach, making a movie isn't the easiest thing in the world.

Re: Garden State

giving away and explaining too much of the story.

mistakes in screenwriting.

Show don't tell.

anyway, this film has scenes that touch me.. proabably the only reason why people are liking it some much.. but it is overrated in my opinion.

Re: Garden State

He also didn't follow a three act structure, but that was one of tht things I liked about it. I dig this flick a lot. There are a lot of quirky characters, but there are a lot of quirky folks in real life. There are people I know in real life that, if I based a character on them, I would be criticized for writing unbelievable slapsticky over-the-top characters. Anyway, I really liked Garden State, but as with most comedies, I enjoyed it a lot more in the theater with a group of people who responded to the material in different ways.

Re: Garden State

I guess I missed the 'Forbidden Screenplay Writing Structure Rule' Violations.

I tend not to get caught up in whether or not a film is a 3 act stucture. (Tarantino for example). Maybe you guys are reading into it too much. ???

I know I really enjoyed a movie the less I notice technical details - Means I was sucked into the story being told.

That is the ultimate goal of the filmmaker after all. :)

Re: Garden State

Good point, Dakota. Even at Pixar, where the technology is such a huge part of what they do, John Lasseter always says that "story is king". And I dug the story and characters in Garden State.

Re: Garden State

this movie was embarassing and too pretentious for it's own good. i hated it. one of the most overrated movies of all time.

finally.. someone knows its overrated

Re: Garden State

It's not one of my favortie flicks of all time; still dug it though as mentioned.

Still not following the "mistakes in screenwriting". Not at all trying to be diffivult (those of you that know me KNOW that!). Just trying to follow the train of thought.

The "mistake" mentioned, about showing not telling, has to be taken with a grain of salt.

The film is dialog-heavy, and that bothers some people. Like, if people talk "too much", it must be exposition, right?

Re: Garden State

Seems to me that Braff was going for a Wes Anderson kind of thing.

Didn’t quite get there.

It was dialogue-heavy, but it seemed to me it was more like a conscious choice than a “mistake.” A style.

I liked it. I didn’t think it was genius, but I liked it.

Nah. It was just typical New Jersey. We're ALL like that. It's in our nature.

Of course, he's from a bit further north than me and Kevin Smith, so some more NYC creeps into the mix.
