gamma, fcp vs. quicktime

im in the middle of color correcting a very dark movie in final cut. on many of the shots i have to push the lights very far to see anything. when i make a quicktime reference file and play back full screen the footage is infinitely brighter. which is more trustworthy? i can see all kinds more information in the quicktime footage where in the same shot in final cut it is just black. some of the shots are so dark that in final cut everything is black, but this is not the case in quicktime. anyone have any insight?

I notice this sometimes with FCP. If you have a preview monitor properly calibrated, you should be able to tell. You might want to ripp both files to DVD and see which looks better on others Televisions etc.

Also, just curious on why you didn't iris up...raising the brightness in post adds grain.

Good Luck

thanks. i just ordered an extra monitor earlier today for editing so hopefully this will fix the issue. i couldnt open the iris anymore because it was already open all the way. we were shooting in a forest with only natural light. the main thing im worried about is there is information in the shadows that i dont want to show up at all. i need to know what is actually black and what is not. also, the noise is not an issue for the project im working on. gain is used on a lot of shots. much of it is only lit with matches, an led flashlight, and a lantern.
does anyone know why this issue comes up? shouldnt they both look the same since they are both natively quicktime.
