Gain question

I never really knew what the decibel numbers correlate to in terms of sensitivity and F stops. I just did a quick test and came up with 3dB adding almost exactly half a stop, but 6dB adding quite a bit more than a full stop. 12dB took me from a 2.8 to around a 6.7, but the gamma curve was visibly different at that point so I couldn't put my finger on an exact number.

Is this normal? Is there even a universally accepted amount of light for gain to add or subtract at all? Or is my camera making a mistake?

Canon XH A1. I will say this, I wouldn't be surprised if there's something wrong with it that's causing it to do that. I've had some extremely strange issues with it. When I first got it, the viewfinder had this really sharp blue tint that was apparently due to an impact. The ND filters also can't be used with preset white balance settings, or else the whole image will be red or green.
