I wouldn't take a chance on either your eyes or a camera sensor unless you know it meets ISO 12312-2. Be aware there are a lot of people selling counterfeits out there.

Gaffer Glass is made for looking at lights, not the Sun.
I was reading the welder's forums and they believe a #13 or #14 welder's shade (a.k.a. lens) will do the job. Take one of those along with a pair of sunglasses and you may have something that works. Keep in mind that welder's shades do not protect against IR or UV. That is a separate filter as I understand it. So you're UV/IR sunglasses take care of that part.
I bought a #13 lens (shade) for about $9. The welder's shade is not a set of glasses, it is a flat piece of glass.
I'm wondering how jammed the roads will be the day before. I expect a good portion of California will be heading up to Oregon to view it.
