I've have had my g5 since the fall and its has been great but lately i have been getting a ton of fan noise. It makes most of its noise when i'm editing or doing something else that is involved. ALso within the last few days a red led light inside of the computer, behind the alum mess, has come on. I have tried to look up tips on this on the web and in my g5 manual, but cant find anything. Anyone have any tips, or even know what the red light means. Anything would help. Thanks.

Sorry -- I haven't seen ANY posts on unwanted fan noise from a G5. I'll keep my eyes open for you. As for the light... have you opened it to see what that might be connected to? Is it the fan? A power supply? Open that puppy up and tell us what it's connected to.

Also, check with the Apple.com sight in their kbase under SUPPORT. I already did, but you might be able to find it better.

Good luck and post back.

Actually--

... one of three possibilities:

a) inner shield not properly seated. (frequent)
Indication: red light visible through front grill (at approx. half-height)
Solution:
- remove and re-install shield. Should snap in with only little force.
- Check if the non-transparent sticker at one of the two tabs at the bottom of the transparent shield is undamaged.

b) Thermal calibration is wrong (often)
Indication: Shield is properly seated, no red light, but fans very loud from the beginning.
Diagnosis: (not possible for owner)
Solution: Apple certified technician, running the thermal recalibration after swapping the CPU modules (which resets the calibration). Don't try this without the adequate tools...

c) Sensor problem (rare)
Indication: (see b)
Diagnosis: Run the hardware test CD that came with the G5.
Solution: Apple certified technician...

Hope this helps narrowing down the problem?

If the fan isn't working properly, could it be that the inside is overheating causing the red light?

Re: G5, red light, tons of fan noise, any tips?

I got the loud fan noise once. I can't remember what happened that caused it but it was so loud. The air was blowing out the back at a pretty good flow too! I didn't recall seeing any red lights though. I just turned off my power and then let it relax for a few minutes then powered it back up and everything is cool...It may have had something to do with the FAN UPDATE. I am not sure though.

Re: G5, red light, tons of fan noise, any tips?

When things get hot and start to overheat the fans get insanely loud at times. Your fan may not be doing its job 100%. CaptM seems to know whats going on. Look into what he found. (nice find capt!)

Call apple, see what they have to say. If you didn't get Applecare, don't worry about it. I have never needed it when calling Apple about hardware issues. Make a big deal about it on the phone. Good luck friend... I will keep my eyes peeled for similar problems and will let you know of any findings!
