G5 powerbook?

Anybody know when the G5 powerbook is going to hit the market? Also if I got a powerbook can I install FCP onto the powerbook with the SAME discs that I used to install on my desktop? There are some softwares out there that will not allow you to install on more than one computer.

Re: G5 powerbook?

Apple has been experiencing problems putting the G5 processor into the laptops due to heat. The G5 chips run very hot, look at the Powermac G5, it has four different thermal cooling zones, 9 fans in total to cool that baby and keep fan noise at a minimum. The reason it took a year to update the G5's was because of those same heat issues. The earliest we'd even see one is early 2005. A good indication of how soon we may see one is at the Apple expo in Paris at the end of this month. The new iMac g5 is supposed to make its debut (fact: Apple stopped selling/producing the current iMac G4 a month ago but mistimed when they'd run out of the G4 in time for the G5) . This new iMac will sport the G5 processor and a new eclosure/design, basically picture the new Apple displays but with the computer mounted like a laptop behind the screen, like a pizza box. If they successfully pull off a G5 in such a small enclosure things look good for the Powerbook G5. However latest news from the rumor mills is that Motorola is developing a Dual core G4 processor that could scale beyond 2GHz, Apple may put that in the Powerbook instead but who knows.

Onto your other question of installing FCP onto another compter, yes you could do it but it's technically wrong. I don't beleive it won't let you install it, but if your running both computers on the same network it won't run both programs at the same time, i.e. having FCP open at the same time on both computers. Hope this info helped.

From what I understand, this is not wrong in any way. The license is to cover one user, not one computer, thus you can use your copy of FCP on any system you install it on as long as you're the one using it. Installing it on a friend's machine and then leaving it there after you've finished "using" it would cross out of this grey area into something illegal, but the license (from how I understand it) covers cases such as yours where an editor might have a notebook editor and a workstation editor.

You can use either one at a time and you're exercising the rights of your license...if you use both at the same time, you're violating the license which is why the software doesn't work on two networked computers.

It's definitely a grey area, but this question has been answered enough to imply that the license can be used on any machine you like so long as you are the one person using it on each of those machines.

Re: G5 powerbook?

thanks for clearing that up because I wasn't completely sure on that. You learn something new everyday.

Re: G5 powerbook?

Back to the original topic. There are a lot of rumors out there about when a G5 might appear in a PowerBook, but the truth is nobody really knows. If you can wait, go ahead and hold on (but I personally think you'll be waiting a while).

If you need a laptop now, I highly recommend the PowerBook G4's. But don't overlook those G5's, because they are incredibly fast. (Unless you already have one. :P)

I also remember thinking that most EULAs allow you to install more than one copy, as long as they aren't being used simultaneously. I don't even know of any software packages that prevent a second installation, but some scan for copies of the same licensed software on the local network.

Anyway, here's the FCP End-User License Agreement:

http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/finalcutpro.html

I don't want to drag this topic out, but it says that you can "install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time". I don't know how enforceable some of these EULAs are, but that sounds pretty explicit to me. :-/

Re: G5 powerbook?

Anything with a hardware dongle might be a machine specific license. High end avid and protools stuff for example, might be terminal oriented rather then user-oriented licensing.

But of course, I don't have an avid, so I'm not sure.

Re: G5 powerbook?

Well, yes, most high-end software is tied to a particular seat; they charge extra for "floating licenses" that can move from workstation to workstation (with an upper limit on simultaneous use).

Re: G5 powerbook?

From the FCP license already linked:
"This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time."

Since IBM is having problems just making regular G5 chips I don't think they'll be coming out with the G5 soon. Usually they tie the release into a large show (MacWorld, NAB, etc)

What ever laptop you get make sure you order it with the highest graphics card you can. You can't update them once you have the machine but it's required for things like Motion and will play more of a role in future machines.

Re: G5 powerbook?

so the question i have now is if I have FCP on a laptop then need to import footage into FCP on my desktop I can do that right? I thnk I am getting confused with someone saying I could only have 1 FCP system running at a time.

Now if I give a copy of my discs to someone to install on their computer, I believe that is prohibited since it is registered in my name correct.

Re: G5 powerbook?

Technically and legally they're saying that you can only install a copy on one machine. (i.e. laptop or desktop, not both) Different software have different rules. Some allow multiple machine if it's one user. The FCP rules do not.

It's unlikely that Apple would target someone who did install it on laptop and desktop but only used one at a time.

And no, you can't provide it to anyone else or run it on a network for other computers.
