G5 Optimum Performance ?

I have an older G5 Dual 2.0. I only have 1 GB of RAM. What is the optimum amount of RAM running Studio. Just curious ? Are there any other upgrades to make her a little more performance orientated, LOL ! Thanks

ATI x800XT graphics card upgrade can make a significant difference over stock card. Many of the FCP Studio apps offload processing of some tasks to the GPU.

RAM would be #1, at 1 gig the OS is probably running partially in virtual memory. two more gigs will cost under $100 at Other World Computing and make a BIG difference. Also get rid of any widgets that are not crucial to your life, they eat up memory and some are working in the background all the time. #2, the stock graphics card is the rock bottom in performance that FCS2 will work with. A card with more memory and more processing will make a difference. How much varies with what you do. FCP probably not a huge difference though maybe more RT, Motion should be improved a bunch. And remember that more than one monitor shares the cards RAM so if you have a 128 meg video card and two monitors you only have 64 meg per monitor. The stock G5 card has I believe 64 megs so that would be 32 per monitor with dual monitors, and that is really low.

So with a 2-3 Gigs more RAM and say a x800XT i should be good to keep running FCS2 for a while, No ?

Are there any other cards that one should look at to replace the G5 stocker ? I need more, LOL !

I heard they had some troubles with the x800. Any other info ?

I upgraded my 4+ year old dual G5 2.0GHz with the x800xt and bumped the RAM to 6GB and swapped the system drive for a WD Caviar 750GB.

I can run Motion and Aperture well on this system, so its good for me.

I had the x800xt in my G5 until other bits and pieces crapped out on me and I upgraded to a Mac Pro. The graphics card, though, never gave me any troubles.
