G5 not using Ram?

Hi everyone,

I'm having a weird problem with my G5 (dual 2.3, 4 gig Ram, 10.4.11 OS). I've got 4 gigs ram installed, but just today, if I pull up the info, it says I've only got 2 gigs. The reason I noticed is because FCP (version 6) is giving me warning signs on dropped frames on the project I'm editing. Anyone ever have this problem?

thanks!

Jonathan

I'd open it up, pull them all out then reattach them. If it still says only 2gbs maybe your ram has gone bad? (don't know if that is possible as I'm not tech savy, but I installed ram once into a g5 and it didn't show up. Turned out one of the pairs wasn't totally in properly, once I stuck em back in it showed up.)

I just had a mac pro complain about 2 sticks not working properly. I noted which spot they were installed into and swapped them with 2 other sticks. When it started up again it said everything was perfectly fine.

Sounds strange, but sometimes just moving your tower around could unset a chip or even possibly a spec of dust got into the slot... Sometimes just re-seating them will fix it.. But it's good to keep an eye on them, in case the problem does come back. Keep notes to make sure which chip it was. And test configs to see that the problem does follow the chip.

Then if your RAM has a lifetime warrantee as does the RAM we buy for our towers, you can present them the info for a free replacement!! :~)

Even the Apple tech's love it when you do all that "let's be sure it's this" testing ahead of time. It makes their job easier, and you get the replacement part you need faster, so you can continue on with your work. ( or play... lol )
