G5 HHD

I just bought a PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz with 2gigs of RAM. My only problem is that there's only 160gig of HHD. I think it's not enough! I had an external 120Gig HHD for my PC and I tough it will work on my mac but it seems like I can't write on it. I can read, copy file from the HDD and paste them on my Mac but I can paste stuff on it! So should I buy an external hard disk for mac ow buy an internal? How much gig?

Re: G5 HHD

Get as big a drive as you can afford. Than get the one bigger! You can never have enough space. Loyd is right, the internal will be faster, and cheaper. There are only two HD slots in the G5, but you can get a internal card that allows you two more after that. I think the whole setup takes up the space of two card slots though. Then there is the external option. One external is rather handy if you have to transport whole projects.

Re: G5 HHD

you can add a drive to your unit.

I bought one from zipzoomfly.com. the recommendation has worked for others, too. let me know if you want the specs.

I think it is a 250 SATA...there rest I forget.

Re: G5 HHD

Does any internal Hard Drive will work on an Apple? Sorry for the stupid question but I'm new to Apple ;D!

Re: G5 HHD

please confirm this at the apple support site before trying it, but it should erase your disk and reformat it as a Mac Volume. make sure you've backed up your files
apple.com/support/

with your PC external drive mounted on the desktop of your mac
go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
select the drive from the list and choose erase. Make sure that the Volume Format drop down menu is set to Mac OS

Re: G5 HHD

I bought the same computer 2 months ago. I thought the same about the hard drive situation but the guy at the local professional Mac shop showed me the light. The 160 drive is more than adequate for your boot drive. That will hold the OS, the applications, word files etc. The G5 has another slot for your FCP files. Its easy to install, and easy to format. Mac even provides the scews and wiring. Its a 3 minute installation. I bought one from OWC. Thats Other World Computing. There web site is:

They have several brands of ATA hard drives in the 250GB range. Thats lots of space if everything else is still on the 160. Good luck. Its a GREAT set up.

Re: G5 HHD

Internal is definitely the way to go for just one drive. However, I did buy a G-RAID and found it to be 25% faster for reads than the internal drive when I tested with Cinebench. http://dvestore.com/products/graid.html
It's great for bouncing between two workstations (home and studio)
